Local BBC news featured restoration of this loco which was the first (and at the time the only Bulleid pacific to be preserved as part of the national collection.

Took place at Ropley on the mid Hants railway.

how far has it been restored? Cosmetic or working?

BBC said:
A restored locomotive that pulled Sir Winston Churchill's funeral train has been unveiled by the fireman who manned the service in 1965.

James Lester unveiled the nameplates as they were reunited with the 34051 Winston Churchill.

The engine and its carriages are being restored for the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston's funeral on 30 January.

The restoration of the locomotive has been carried out by Mid-Hants Railway, Ropley.....

Sadly, only cosmetic.

Given your avatar you really should be able to spell Bulleid correctly. :)
Will be nice to see '51 in her new coat of paint. Some areas had begun to look really tatty. Just a shame the restoration wasn't to working order.

It is a shame in some ways, but there are plenty of operational Bulleid pacifics in both forms and iirc a couple more are close to return, so I suppose it's not a major loss really. She'll look fabulous though.

If I didn't have a clapped out computer or clapped out body, both due to old age and high mileage yes

The more Bulleid Pacific's the better for me, my favourite classes of steam locomotives, even though Iam a northerner. The West Countries come first rebuilt or unrebuilt, then the Merchant Navy, preferably rebuilt, I just wish more of Bullieds lovely coaching stock had been saved though:(

There is an article on this very subject in the latest issue of Railway Magazine.

That comment takes me way back to my school days when I made a similar spelling error. The English master made me stay back after school and write the correct spelling 100 times.

Back on topic, I shall have to get a copy of that magazine article.

Along the lines of detention, slippers, canes and the fear of God?

to return to the OP if 34051 part oif the national collection and usually on static display at York, what were the reasons for transporting it halfway across the country for a coat of paint?

BBC news reported it's "restoration" without any details and showed excerpts from it working the funeral train of WC

I was wondering this. Is there any reason why they've sent it so far? Couldn't Shildon have done it in-house?!

I'm not certain here, also I realise it is owned by the NRM, but was it possibly already down at the Mid Hants Railway, and that's the reason it is being restored at Ropley? They do after all have lots of expertise in restoring Ex Southern locomotives.

I don't know about immediately before the restoration but for a long time 34051 was in the Station Hall at the NRM so it seems a bizarre move. Unless someone can confirm it was down there for something else anyway?

Very good, sadly in my schooldays, I.T. was a far off dream, we had to do such impositions by hand, in our best writing. We used think how wonderful decimal calculators were, not that we were allowed to use them for out schoolwork. Home PCs, laptops, Mobiles etc were all very much in the future. The other bit of wonderful technology that was just happening then was 8 track audio cassettes and Betamax video tape recorders.

Yes that's all true too. Now the teachers seem afraid of some of the children at school, how times have changed.

By the way, I just had an email from steam dream, sort of related to this topic, there seems to be an exhibition happening soon at the York NRM in connection with Sir Winston Churchill's funeral train. I am sure that will be popular.

2015 represents the 50th Anniversary of Churchill's death - hence the NRM are putting ona 'Churchill's final journey' exhibition which is why 34051 has been restored and likewise the the parcel van in pullman livery.

Still don't know why it was sent all the way down to MHR though.

When I last saw 'Winston Churchill' at York she was being displayed as an example of an unrestored locomotive, i.e. pretty rough. With all the other shiny exhibits in the NRM it's no bad thing to show visitors how much work is required to get them into this gleaming condition. As previous posters have pointed out there are plenty of other Bulleid Pacifics out there.

Although if you read the article in the Railway Magazine the NRM have said all that is standing in the way of it running again is money.

Various examples are given, main one being a lot of cab fittings were lifted from Winston Churchill to be used on Ellerman Lines when it was being turned into the sectioned exhibit. The write up claims that the new machined pieces have been made so that they can be used for a return to steam rather than just dummies for cosmetic display.

an "unrestored" steam locomotive surely has place in tribute to the final years of steam on BR especially 1963 onwards when a steam locomotive could be filthy dirty shorn of plates and mechanically run down yet with an enthusiastic crew put up a fine performance

signalman's twilight Vaughan pub murray 1983 pp 155 - 160

London - Weymouth/Salisbury and the fine performances of the Bullied pacifics esp 1966/7 when certain crews tried to achieve the magic "ton" in regular service. Official speed limit 85

We hired it for a steam gala as a static loco. The Mid Hants is one of the best places to look after Bulleids (after all we have 4 of them now) and also it makes sense to start fundraising for a southern locos restoration in the locos home terrority.

Many thanks for setting us all straight on that one, may I just say it looks superb in the Railway Magazine pictures, let's hope she returns to steam sooner than later:)

Edit: there appears to be something amiss with the quotes on this thread?
