Looks like they are planning for further disruption over the weekend due to the high winds.

Anyone with advances to Inverness, the far north or west highland lines for the weekend are allowed to travel tomorrow.

Thursday's Fort Bill sleeper has also been cancelled.

Scotrail

Met Office weather warnings for high winds are in place across Scotland from Thursday until Saturday – with extremely strong gusts expected in many areas.

Alongside industry partners, we are closely monitoring the situation as it is highly likely that some rail services will be affected, particularly in more exposed areas.

For safety reasons, we have cancelled the Edinburgh to Fort William portion of the northbound Sleeper on Friday morning; and the southbound portion from Fort William to Edinburgh on Friday evening. Affected customers are being offered replacement transport or refunds.

East Coast

High winds are forecast across Scotland from the evening of Thursday 8 until Saturday 10 January. The situation is being monitored by Network Rail and the train operators for any possible effect on train services.


East Coast
East Coast have not yet made any alterations to services during the expected period of bad weather, but as a precaution, passengers booked to travel on routes north of Edinburgh (stations to and from Aberdeen and Inverness) and on the East Coast service between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central may travel on Thursday 8 January if possible, or contact East Coast's Customer Relations Team on 03457 225225 for help with arranging an alternative travel date.

Doubt it tbh. The EC site says that only passengers travelling North or west of Edinburgh can travel earlier which is only five services a day (3 ABZ, 1 INV & 1 GLC).

I'd imagine these services will still run but may be curtailed at EDB if needs be. Your reservation should be fine I think.

I think there's going to be a lot of clearing up to do come morning... Plenty of power cuts reported across Scotland, and several locations have recorded wind speeds well over 100mph.

Due to the severity of the overnight storm, ALL ScotRail services are currently suspended to allow Network Rail to check the lines are safe for trains to run. At present we are advising customers NOT to try to travel by train. Thank you for your understanding. We are working with Network Rail to re-open lines as soon as we can.



Travelling on a different date
Tickets already purchased for travel on 9 January may be used on 10 January (if the lines have re-opened) or at a future date if that suits you better. Simply present your unused ticket to gateline or onboard staff.

If that's not convenient, or you prefer not to travel, you can get a full refund from any ScotRail ticket office, or by mailing the ticket to:

All Services out of Glasgow seem to have been suspended - although the 0515 Glasgow to Falkirk Grahamston got away before the blanket ban !!

Looks like the X37 Bus could be rammed this morning.

This was the first train to call at Falkirk High today.

The Highland Sleeper ran into some fallen tree branches at Cupar earlier this morning:

The branches were cleared and the train continued slowly onwards to Aberdeen.

2I10 hit an object on the approach to Stadium of Light, looks as if it was a plastic panel from the roof of a Transit van. Up Sunderland blocked everything held behind it. Unfortunately the panel was wedged under the train so had to be removed before the Metro could start running again.

Was walking through Edinburgh in the early hours after a ,ahem, quite robust night out- there were several places where it was impossible for me to stand- I have certainly never experienced anything like it. There were a couple of those very large commercial bins being blown along one road despite their brakes being on. Nice bit of snow due tomorrow too to add to the fun!

I don't have any inside rail knowledge but surely they have to draw the line somewhere. The obvious answer would be that they decided after that train had run that they would pull everything - and that train happened to have no issues.

The decision is after all based on risk rather than knowing for certain what would happen to every train.
