OK, so I thought I would try my hand at writing a more contemporary report, covering a recent Strathclyde Daytripper move that I did.

I’ll begin with an explanation of my approach to unit bashing.
Mileage is not important; it’s individual coaches that I go for. In order for me to “clear” a unit I have to ride on every vehicle that makes up the set and this has to be done between two booked stops, so none of that walking through the train when it’s on the move nonsense :)
153s are a bit easier to clear than 180s ;)
What can I say? One of the great things about this hobby is that you can do whatever you want.
My game, my rules.

So anyway, back in 2012 the wife and I had a holiday in Scotland. It’s our habit to book a few nights in a Travelodge or similar and use that as our base. Once at base camp we drive to the nearest railway station and visit our required attractions by train.
This serves two purposes, one) it cuts down on the amount of driving I have to do and two) I quite like trains.
I always do my research and come up with interesting places to visit and what the best tickets for the job are. In this case it was the aforementioned Daytripper and we used it to visit places such as Ayr and Troon. The tickets we bought were scratchcards and so we got a job lot to see us through the week, I also bought one extra with the intention of returning for a fully fledged railway move at some point in the future.

Fast forward two years and I realised that I still had this unused scratchcard and it expired at the end of 2014. That would be a tenner down the drain and I wasn’t having that, so a plan was put in place.

I booked Friday the 24th of October off work and made my plans.
It was 156s that I was after as I needed (or at least hadn’t previously recorded) many of them for haulage.

I got up bright and early at 5am and set off on the drive. I had decided to make my way to Shotts as it has a nice big car park that’s free and seems relatively secure.
Shotts is the Eastern limit of the Daytripper , so no extra tickets would be required.

I made my way North by travelling via Skipton to the M6, then the M74, leaving the motorway about 12 miles from my destination. This is quite a nice drive usually and one that I admit to enjoying, particularly North of Preston. Unfortunately, on this occasion my trip was spoiled because at around 06.30 my concentration wavered and the darkness of the night was brightly illuminated as I was captured by the infamous speed camera at Kirkby Londsdale :(
Bugger! My own fault, of course, but it did put a dampener on the day.

Anyway, the rest of the journey went without problems and I arrived at Shotts at five past nine, with my target being the 09.19 to Glasgow.
When this arrived it was winner 156504 and I immediately went to coach 52504.
The one with the toilet.
Well, it had been a long drive.

Here is 156504 after arrival:

Once in Glasgow it was another winner, in the shape of 156502, out to Whifflet.
I did 57502 out and then came part way back in 52502, that’s one cleared.
After bailing off 156502 at Carmyle it was another winner in the shape of 156437 and, sat in 57437, I made the short journey to Bargeddie to pick up the third unit on the circuit. This was 156506 and I made use of 52506 back to Glasgow.
Next up was a round trip to Dunlop, using 156436 (52436) and 156501 (52501). I went back out on 156501, obviously after moving to 57501, bailing at Crossmyloof for no other reason than I like the name.

Here is the excellently named Crossmyloof, with 156501 in platform 2:
DMU 156501_2014.10.24_Crossmyloof by philwood55013, on Flickr

156435 was then taken back to Glasgow, sitting in 57435, before another round trip to Dunlop on 156509 (52509) and 156514 (52514). It was then time to head home as I didn’t want to be too late back, so it was 156504 (this time in 57504 – another one cleared) to Bellshill, followed by 57449, of unit 156449, back to Shotts . I intended to do a round trip back to Bellshill but the PIS showed the 17.19 as being “Delayed”, announcements gave the same information, with no ETA, so it was back to my car I went.

The drive back went without incident and I arrived home early enough to watch a recording of that evening’s episode of “Pointless” with the missus before bed.

All in all, an enjoyable day out, although not a patch on the moves of old, of course.
So any thoughts "Stick to the old stuff", etc?

Cheers,
55013

No such luck from me regarding sticking to the old stuff only! I enjoyed the tale of your day out on the modern day scene, and looking forward to more one day.

I can't talk for all of us, but reading other people's trip reports provides both inspiration for future trips (quite, having read this tonight on the bus home from work, I'm now planning to do some moves in the Bellshill and Whifflet area on Sunday/Monday as it seems good for 156s!) and something to help fill the time between one trip and the next. It might only be 9 days since my last day out but really can't wait for the next one this weekend!

Good thing you found that Daytripper when you did really! £10 back then and it's gone up somewhat since then, was £11.70 in autumn 2013 so dread to think what it is now!

Shame about the speed camera incident, surprising how little things like that can put a big dampner on a day!

I cannot fathom the logic you use for clearing MUs, but if it works for you then fair games. It is true though, it's one of the great things about bashing, there's no fixed rules! Personally it doesn't matter to me if an MU has 1 or 6 coaches, once I've done a journey on it then it's cleared. I count which coaches in said MU I've done though, until I've done them all then I stop wasting ink/stop typing them into my notes.

Are you doing EMUs as well? If so I'm surprised you didn't go for some 314s as they'll be gone in the next couple of years. I'm definitely making sure I get some journeys in on them when I'm up there this weekend, as I have no idea when I'll next get the chance to do so.

I do concur regarding the drive up north of Preston, only done it once on a National Express coach in daylight (plenty of other times by Megabus during the night!) but that was still a good trip through decent scenery.

By all means keep the trip reports from years gone by coming (I think I still have an Oxfordshire Day Ranger one from early 2012 to do yet!), but definitely keep the modern day ones going!

I wouldn't mind going back to Glasgow area to cover the new electric services since May.

314s will most likely be the first to go to Northern, once the new EMUs arrive.

156s are one of my favourite DMUs.

Excellent. Most of my trips these days consist of shuttling backwards and forwards between the same two stations, so would make boring reading.
However I shall in future be keeping the possibility of a report in my mind.

Indeed, I've found reading all the reports posted on here have been giving me ideas.
Just one thing, I believe the Whifflet turns have now gone over to EMUs.

Ah, the advantage of scratchcards, shame they seem to have fallen out of favour with the TOCs, although I can see why. Buying in bulk has saved me a lot of money over years.

It's because I commute to work between Bradford and Halifax and I started properly getting into DMUs in 2012 when my car died and I had to use the train.
It became an interesting way of spicing up the journey, trying to travel on all of Northern's DMU coaches.
It's actually quite difficult. Two years on and I still need a few of their 142 and 150 coaches.
156s very rarely stray this side of the Pennines these days, although I did have one Halifax to Bradford in 2012, so there are quite a few of them I need as well.

Coincidently, I have needed just one 144 vehicle, 55836 from 144013, for ages and I had it to work this morning, so that pleased me :)
To cut a long story short, my desire to ride on every Northern DMU vehicle grew to include every unit on the network.

As regards rules of the game, there are a few things I would regard as fudging – counting a loco for haulage when it’s being dragged dead or scoring a loco for sight because you’ve seen it on the TV, for example (Yes, I’ve heard of both of these happening), but even then it’s not really any of my business.

Oh yes, I do EMUs, although I prefer diesel traction. The thing with 156s in particular is that I did them a lot on my all-liners and other ancient moves but because I didn’t record them it now bugs me, so I need to whittle them down whenever I get the chance, just to scratch that particular itch.

I did an Oxfordshire Day Ranger last year that might make an interesting tale, now that you mention it. I’ll see what I can conjure up. I’m a bit busy for the next few days (including going to see Madness tonight for the umpteenth time) so it might have to wait a while.

156s are one of my favourite DMUs.

I think on balance they're mine too, although I must admit to a perverse liking for 142s but don't tell anyone ;)

cheers,

Agreed on those two comments regarding fudging, and yes I've heard of both happening too!

Congratulations on clearing your 144s today! I finally cleared the local Mercedes MCV Evolution for 10,000 miles today, not anywhere near as fun lol.

I'll look forward to seeing your Oxfordshire Day Ranger report in due course, I sympathise with being busy, it's getting outrageous at work lately so I haven't time to do much at all!

I too love 156s, although I'm also happy with a 150. Mind you I'm also happy with a 313 and they're not terribly liked on the Southern Region!

EDIT: Oh yeah, Whifflet is EMUs now but I'm not complaining if it's BR EMUs!

Keep raiding the archives! I've been seriously bashing on and off since 1978 (more on than off) and I have some loco haulage records going back even further than that - just wished I had logged DMUs and EMUs then. O for a time machine ....

I'm in the process of tidying up my haulage records. Then I need to accurately log what track I've done and in the process seeing what track I still need - there's some that I know that have travelled over which I have no record of such as York to Harrogate. So, no record means that I'll have to go and do it all over again! I've even gone as far as getting a new Bakers and set of highlighter pens in order to start from scratch.

Once I have all that sorted out, I'll start trawling through the records and hopefully providing "selected cuts" for fellow travellers to enjoy on here. Who's up for a South Wales Explorer or a West Country Tripper? Or perhaps a summer Saturday on the North Wales Coast full of 40s? Or I should I land the tardis in the East Midlands in the late 70s with (almost) wall to wall freight locos?

Totally agree with that. I don't know anyone who would count either of those as fair game but each to their own!

Aye, me too. I now record everything. I've lots of gaps, though, particularly in my early days. I didn't even record loco haulages at the start, just put "PB" (pulled by) next to the number. I've loads of unrecorded haulages off 40s, 45s, 46s and 47s. I know I had them, but don't know when or where. Very annoying!
The late lamented Time Warp website did help me somewhat, for example I knew I'd had 25080 on a Carlisle to Leeds service on a Saturday in the early 80s, using the gen on there I managed to pinpoint exactly when and which service it was. Sadly, though, most of the locos were too "common" to narrow down to one specific date.

I'm salivating at the prospect. I love all these old tales and can't wait to read them.

Yes, some trips from Memory Lane will come but first off I need to finish off computerising all my old records from the late 70s and early 80s. We are almost there but it will still be a few weeks yet as there are cross checks, statistics etc to do before I feel confident enough to give a good story. And it does not help when I am still bashing and need to keep up to date.

Tech - Hope the 30th is going well/went well. I spent my 30th with a half day wander around the smoke mopping up a few 4EPBs and 4VEPs. Not particularly exciting in those days ...

Thanks, my 30th itself was spent on a coach for the first 10 and a bit hours of it, followed by a couple of hours in London before getting a 350 back to Birmingham and a 170+153 back to Hereford. Then it was to the pub with a colleague from work for a few drinks before a lift home for a well earnt meal. So mine wasn't super exciting to be fair either, although most of us would love to have an EPB these days (I sure would, I missed out), and some VEPs and CIGs would be a lovely trip down Memory Lane!

Good luck getting your records all sorted, it took me long enough to get my lot done and I'm still missing a lot it appears!
