Had the 'pleasure' of catching the first Barking-Gospel Oak service today (the 06:18 ex-Barking) at Wanstead Park and it was rammed, to the point that I thought I might not get on.
It made me wonder if there are any other DMUs off lease at the moment that could be used, to free some 172s so they can run as four cars?

Unless someones stashed a few away in there shed, none! I remember when the 170s were new a few 158s went off lease for a short time but sooon found new home - not even sure if there was much of a break in service for them.↲

As others have said, nothing off lease at the moment. The positive thing is that although it was full, you made it on. Plenty of services across the country that sadly do end up leaving passengers behind. I think a number of TOCs could do with a bit more capacity to utilise.

I have been physically pushed onto a 158 to Nuneaton by the platform staff at New Street because I didn't want to board it it was that full. I was told the next one would be much worse.

There's nothing available, but TfL have started the process to procure 4-car EMUS for the line. Not much use now, but real progress for the future.

If 20 DMU coaches were available the black Friday fights would be nothing compared to what the TOCs would get up to so they could get their hands on them! ;)

Oh and as previously stated there are no DMU vehicles in store and only some (9?) 317/7s EMUs in store, these are in store because they cost a bloomin fortune to lease compared to the other 317s because they have been fitted with air conditioning etc for their former duties on Stansted express services.

I don't think LOROL quite realised just how much of a popularity boost those lines would get given an improved service - hence the 3-car 378s becoming fours, then fives. You'll notice the new stock arriving before the end of the decade will share the same 4-car length as the other units in the order, that should deal with capacity on the GOBLIN for a fair while. Whether they'll be adequate for routes like Chingford and Enfield given they represent a far less significant capacity increase over 315s, is yet to be seen.

I can just see MDs up against the door of a ROSCO office scrabbling and punching for a 150!

I think they pretty much went straight into service with their new operators – The four that went to TPE certainly entered service there in ex-Scotrail condition. The two that went to Wales & West however got a repaint first, as I recall, and were essentially used to launch the new “Alphaline” livery (after some experimentation had taken place with 158867).

But you’re right, at present there is nuffink available. Though there's a vague rumour that Iran have long since had enough of their imported 141s…

There were a couple of "spare" 170s ordered by the ROSCO at the time, intended for "spot hire"- but those quickly became part of the leased fleet

There's some 141s up for grabs. They're rotting away in sidings in Iran if London Overground want to go and search for them. <D

On that basis will London be returning Optare and Dennis buses built in the North on demand if we run short of capacity on our bus routes?

The rate we're going with self-powered stock, it really wouldn't surprise me to see a TOC using Mk2 coaches and a loco for route where there aren't any DMUs. Didn't Northern run a few of those for the Tour de France in Yorkshire, in fact?

I can see 60163 hauling scheduled services if nothing else is available...

Greater Anglia use locos+ stock due to DMU shortage on Norwich-"Great" Yarmouth.

Yes, it was the very small batch 170 399 down that were the spot hire fleet.

edit - 393-6 ended up in Scotland, 397/8 are with XC and 399 is with TPX, renumbered to 309

393-396 were specifically ordered for Hull Trains, were they not?

A flippant answer is, given the reliability of the TPE 350s, TPE Anglo-Scottish services! They aren't surplus though, TPE got a fleet boost to run new and/or augmented routes.

Ok cheers , I knew nothing about diagrams etc only noticed the recent influx of TPE 350s on the northern end of the WCML and assumed this might possibly have released some 185s for use elsewhere

In fact TPE are in the market for DMUs as their current 170s are destined for Chiltern in the next 12 months or so.....

Are there any routes around the UK currently operated by DMUs that would be suitable for being loco-hauled (top&tailed or with a DVT), to free up a few DMUs?

Yes, they were never spot hire units. 170397 - 399 were the spot hire units.

Most of the spare units were swallowed up by TPEs' fifth train per hour over the North Transpennine route, the Newcastle to Liverpool service.
