Worst character in otherwise excellent shows

I'm a huge fan of The Big Bang Theory, but I really can't stand Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz. The voice, the meaness. For me she ruins any episode in which she heavily features.

I'd rather have seen Howard continue in his slightly creepy failed womanising attempts that have married him off to Bernadette.

What other examples do folk have of characters ruining otherwise excellent shows?

Anything with Stephen Fry in it is totally unwatchable as far as I am concerned, and if Sue Perkins was half as amusing as she thinks she is she'd be comedy gold, instead of dross.

You're right - the programme has never been the same without Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman!

In the same way, for me "New Tricks" has never be the same without the original team of Alun Armstrong, Amanda Redman and James Bolam.

By the way, what's happened to that nice Alvar Lidell who used to read the news on the wireless? [!]

I do find myself agreeing on bnm's comments regarding TBBT, seems so weird watching older episodes when Howard is always chasing women, knowing what happens in later seasons. Bernadette seems to have been made very irritating in the last couple of seasons.

Worst character in a show,well I don't know off the top of my head, although the creepy old man (Herbert) in Family Guy gets on my wick. No doubt more will come to mind later!

I will take this opportunity to say Melissa Rauch > Kaley Cuoco

Anyway, Family Guy for me is Brian. Should have kept him dead, so boring and at times downright aggravating. Never been enamoured to the Stewie and Brian adventures either.

Agree, and also the whingeing Grundy brothers. But worst of all, the script / editorial team, who seem to be trying to wreck the entire programme with unlikely stories. Perhaps, like many other soaps, it would benefit by a long holiday. (A long break led to a big improvement in Dr. Who)

I'm afraid I have to disagree on both counts. I think Nick Hewer has a brilliantly dry sense of humour. I love the time when Richard Madeley was on Countdown and Nick said "We all look forward to hearing more of your fascinating stories tomorrow." He could have been genuine or more likely, exceptionally sarcastic.

As for New Tricks, I did wonder if it might deteriorate with such a major change of cast but no, as far as I'm concerned it's just as good now as it ever has been, even if it has changed a bit.

I'll agree with you there I do agree that the Bernadette character has gained an unpleasant edge that I'm not sure I like, plus her marriage to Howard has taken away a big and funny part of his character. Still probably the second best comedy show coming out of the US at the moment.

Mark Lamarr on Shooting Stars. When Will Self went in his place it was a showcase of deadpan, but with a sackful of wit. A huge improvement.

Another annoying one is that cricket programme (or any programme) when that Kevin Pieterson is on.

Not sure whether the US show Parks and Recreation gets much of an audience in the UK.

I can't stand the main character, Leslie Knope, but continue watching the show because I like most of the other characters (each of them flawed or ridiculous in some way).

Probably a result of me working for many years in the USA with some real-life people (both male & female) of Ms Knope's ilk - hyper-energetic (mostly caffeine and sugar-fuelled) who take both themselves and their petty jobs very seriously. Makes you appreciate a good old British Jobsworth.

As for Countdown, I don't mind Nick Hewer but he's not as good as Jeff Stelling was.

Mark Lamarr on Shooting Stars. When Will Self went in his place it was a showcase of deadpan, but with a sackful of wit. A huge improvement.

Conversely, Lamarr was a hard act to beat as host of Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

I wouldn't say Simon Amstell was inferior, but his contribution definitely changed the character of the show. The Chantelle's Autobiography incident was a tour de force! Rhod Gilbert seems to be a good choice so far, 8 shows into his first run as non-guest host.

Likewise Noel Fielding's contributions are very different to Bill Bailey's, but I think he's matured into the role of team captain. Alas Sean Hughes's tenure opposite Phill was before my time.

I wasn't sure at first when they replaced James Bolam with Denis Lawson, but actually I think the change has done the show good and refreshed it a bit.

Abi Branning in Eastenders! - OMFG she is the most boring and worthless character in the whole soap! - 'wah, wah, I didn't get into Uni!, wah!' - grow up....

I agree with Paul's son on the part of Mary in Coronation Street - she is a psycho bitch who wants Norris to the point that it's scary!

Finally, Chris in Family Guy! Speaks once or twice an episode, and brings nothing to the show. Boring. Fat. Idiot.

Also, I know this show is presented by him, but I absolutely despise (with a passion!) that Nick Grimshaw on the radio shows and Sweat the Small Stuff. He's just so irratating - and I can't explain my hatred for him!

Loved nearly all aspects of this brilliant comedy - aside from the scenes where it was her and Marina faffing around doing nothing funny. But then again, I suppose after Bill Owen died, the show was doomed anyway!

He was replaced by Old Mr Grace (Kenneth Waller) who was actually almost thirty years younger: and rubbish.
