Penge East to Canterbury West routeing question

Good afternoon

I am a fairly regular off-peak traveller to Canterbury.

I wish to travel from Penge East to Canterbury West on Saturday. Usually, I catch the Orpington service and change there for a direct onward connection (or Sevenoaks) as it's cheaper because I buy a "not via London" ticket. (I used to travel via Chatham to Canterbury East but my parents have mobility problems and East is on the other side of town for them).

My question is, if I buy a ticket from Penge East to Canterbury West on an "any permitted" route, does this allow me to travel on HS1 from St Pancras International (i.e. SouthEastern from Penge East to Herne Hill and then Thameslink to St Pancras)?

I fancy a change because the SouthEastern route is too slow now.

Obviously I'm prepared to pay a little more for the convenience of the faster service (and I've never been on the High Speed) so would just like to know if this route falls under the "any permitted".

Yes.

There are three sets of tickets between Penge Stations and Canterbury Stations:

• Route NOT VIA LONDON, e.g. £25.10 Off-Peak Day Return
• Route ✠NOT VALID ON HS1, e.g. £30.00 Off-Peak Day Return
• Route ✠ANY PERMITTED, e.g. £35.50 Off-Peak Day Return

Only the most expensive of these three is valid on HS1. The ✠ symbol indicates a ticket is valid for appropriate cross-London transfer by tube or Thameslink.

I think travelling on the more expensive route (i.e. HS1) might actually work out cheaper for me (and family) because I can use the family railcard.
