Having attended Lincoln Christmas Market a couple of years ago, it's a waste of time. Nice city, crap market.

The market's been bad since the council enforced a oneway system on the market. It's not worth going to. Lincoln is for a daytrip if churches and broken castles are your thing. But mainly Lincoln is student town now. Newark is just as good for shopping.

A lot of services are 4 vice 2 or 1, and there are some additional Worksop to Lincoln shuttles as well. Plus some additional Rail Replacement buses in strategic locations to get people to/from the market in the event of disruption or overcrowding. Just the same as last year then.

The problem with Lincoln’s Christmas Market is that it is condenses into a single weekend an entire month’s worth of festive demand, making actually intending to get near any of the stalls an almost hopeless cause - As you say, the one way system does not help dispel the sensation of being herded like cattle.

Lincoln is a superb city to visit for a day out, but having attended once I would conclude that the Lincoln Christmas Market is an excellent reason to stay as far away as possible from the place on that particular weekend!

Living in the celestial city, and working in an office not far removed from New Street, I can confirm that this is the case.

It was a bit of a bugger nipping out for lunch or at the end of the day when I worked in an office actually on New Street though…

They relented quite a lot on the one-way system last year, and weren't forcing everyone to walk round the Cathedral to exit the Market. Unfortunately, it's just spoiled by the crowds in the main area - the stalls in the Bishop's Palace are usually fairly quiet and probably the only bit of the Market still worth visiting.

There are certainly some Meridians diagrammed on the Lincoln - Leicester services, and I'm told that some of the extra shuttles to Newark North Gate will be operated by HST sets. The Sunday services via the Joint to Peterborough will operate out ECS from Lincoln via the Sleaford avoider - sadly not in service for the rare track enthusiasts!

It is pretty fantastic. I've noticed Manchester and Leeds have followed suit and gone for their own versions in recent years. Manchester are aiming to be as Manchester as possible in the marketing of theirs, most of which seems to state "er, we've got more stalls than Birmingham have (we checked) so can we be the second city please?"

Lincoln is the original Christmas Market, hence why I go every year. Four cups of mulled wine endless glasses of actual wine and a few bratwursts to fill me up - magic.

Leeds is a poor version of it as they charge almost £7 for mulled wine (plus cup hire fee which is not refunded as someone else was complaing to the stallholder in Leeds) where as its £4 in a paper cup at Lincoln.

I hate the Bath Christmas market! People were standing all the way from Southampton to Bath on the 1610 yesterday and the crush between Westbury and Bath was worse than the Tube what with being on a Class 158 with (predictably) failed air conditioning and all the windows locked shut.

Still at least FGW are fairly responsive to the Bath Christmas market and do put extra trains on.

EDIT: Actually the Bath Chronicle reports that it didn't go so well for FGW this morning:

Chaos reigns at Bath Spa railway station this morning as train delays and crowd-control barriers hamper visitors’ efforts to reach the popular Bath Christmas Market.

Hundreds of people pouring out of the train station, some from late-running trains, are having their progress blocked by rows of plastic orange barriers.

Bath resident Lyndsey Mayhew, who met her mother off the train this morning, was outraged by the sight greeting visitors on a day that should be showcasing Bath.

“I’m absolutely furious,” Ms Mayhew said. “It’s just disgusting. This is people’s first impression of our beautiful city.

“People are struggling to get past the barriers.

“There are just so many people. It’s like hundreds of ants pouring out of this tiny ant hole.”
