Major disruption on the East Coast mainline tonight, looks like 1S30 1830 Kings Cross to Edinburgh has brought the wires down around Newark, and has subsequently been cancelled

All trains from the 1749 to Leeds onwards are currently at a stand. As this train and the 1800 are in front of the failed train, presumably power has been lost across a wider area?

1S28 1800 Kings Cross - Edinburgh is the train involved. It would seem the train is stood in the Rossington area. All trains were stood, including Doncaster Station with OLE trip affecting everything north towards Marshgate Jn. 1A69 (diesel) was able to proceed on the UML and examined the line, seems to be heading south Ok now around 40L.

Looks like I left work at the right time, it could be a very long evening for all involved...

There's currently a queue of 18 trains waiting on the northbound line between Retford and Stevenage, the 2100 from Kings Cross (KGX) is about to become the 19th!

The 2100 Newcastle and 2135 Leeds have both been cancelled. Everything is still at a stand, delays are up to 130 mins at the moment.

I bet taxi drivers at Leeds, Newcastle etc are going to make a fortune tonight!

Looks like 1D27 1822 Kings X - Leeds has gone via Swinderby. 71L, Wakefield Westgate. Talk of Single Line Working over the Up Main. Probably not a lot of scope to divert stuff via Swinderby as most of the trains are electric and the Doncaster t/bird is already attached to the failure.

It won't be continuing to destination. Train loco is 91114 being assisted by the Doncaster t/bird.

Me and my girlfriend were on this train. We had gotten the 18:18 from Lincoln to Newark Northgate, before waiting for the 19:46 to York (18:30 off of King's Cross). We boarded it, sat on it for 15 minutes, before de training and going over to platform 3. We boarded the previously mentioned train to Bradford FS, which went via Swinderby and the avoiding Lincoln line. Got to Doncaster at about 21:20, and jumped on a XC service, even if we weren't meant to! EC said they had laid on an extra train to continue to Edinburgh, but we didn't hang around to check it.

Was very very annoyed at the disruption, especially as I had an event to go to tonight, but I'm glad we managed to go via Swinderby in the end, and we were only about two hours late.

If the power goes down in one place on the ECML, how much of the rest of the line does it affect? Is it split into sections of x number of miles? How many services will have had to be assisted by a Thunderbird tonight?

As Expected, more problems today:

Overhead wire problems near Doncaster are causing major disruption to journeys between Peterborough and Doncaster. Trains between these stations may be delayed by up to 60 minutes, and the following services will be cancelled:

05:50 London Kings Cross to Leeds
07:05 London Kings Cross to Leeds
08:03 London Kings Cross to Leeds
08:30 London Kings Cross to Newcastle
09:03 London Kings Cross to Leeds
05:30 Leeds to London Kings Cross
06:40 Leeds to London Kings Cross
05:56 Newcastle to London Kings Cross

Twitter is also full of people complaining that when they did finally reach their destination station, there were no staff or taxis on hand for onward travel.

I'm currently on 1Y03 0445 Newcastle - Kings X. We stand near Joan Croft Jn and it would appear there's an issue handing back the OLE isolation from the emergency possession overnight, which included Doncaster Station. 1Y03 to terminate at Doncaster with passengers forward on 1A04 0605 Leeds - Kings X via Swinderby. Time will tell if that comes off!!

Information I've seen states efforts are being made to make the Down Main good for coasting with electric traction for around 0800hrs.

I'm surprised there wasn't a fiasco when they arrived, and found Bradford interchange closed. Would the Northern Rail evening shift have to stay 4 hours beyond the usual closing time to keep it open?

At least there was a chance of staff at Bradford Interchange. Imaging what it would have been like getting off at Wakefield Kirkgate at 0309? Unless GC had someone there with some taxis on hand, that would have been one scary experience.

My dad was on one of the affected trains last night (Eaglescliffe - Kings X), ironically he had no problems on his earlier journey on a 142 (apart from feeling uncomfortable due to the rocking motion and noise).

Unfortunately not. Mutual acceptance was officially stood down at 1400. All is holding up Ok now and hopefully normal service will resume properly tomorrow.

Quite something for it to get to Edinburgh after that night's Highland Sleeper had arrived at Stirling! To be honest, I'm surprised it wasn't cancelled due to staffing issues. Do East Coast have a night cover shift for eventualities like this, which can have staff in place at strategic locations to relieve other crew? After all, silly o'clock arrivals have happened a number of times before after incidents of this nature, so it would be sensible (if not necessarily cheap, easy or actually done in real life) to have a backup plan of some sort for relieving those who have potential to end up spending rather too long on their turn.
