One place apparently not getting increased VTEC services is Hull.
Is this clearing the way for the FirstGroup-led electrification project, and extra Hull Trains services?
And does the new London-Middlesbrough service tell us anything about TPE plans after electrification?
Stirling was due to get a London service under Virgin's old plans for West Coast (post EGIP).

I'd like to know more about the 'at-seat ordering' of food.

I imagine it's very similar to what happens on Cross Country. You order your food in advance online and, if you don't, you don't get fed.

Stagecoach closing down the buffet counter and replacing it with a sub-contractor trolley? Sounds awfully familiar to those of us using East Midlands Trains.

As for the win, well, I guess all those millions Brian gave to the Scottish National Party have just cashed in.

Assume thats a typo rather then him spilling the beans a day early?

He'll have been told yesterday but it will have been embargoed. It'll have been written and loaded on to the website yesterday, I'm certain.

Although all the imagery is of West Coast, I think it's a fair bet that there'll be a splash of red in the EC colour scheme next year, both trains and staff.

I reckon the Mk4s would look quite nice with the red and blue Pendolino interior. I hope they replace the seat cushions with a different design, though - the sloped-forward base gives me back issues as it has no under-thigh support whatsoever.

And just one last thing. You know the cartoon infographic on Gov.UK? Is it me, or does the inside of the carriage look suspiciously like a 142?

East Coast's success was not down to being publicly owned. It was run as a private company by managers from the private sector. It was evidently run very well, but its ownership was not the sole reason for its success and as resale/refranchising was always the plan, the operation had to be suitably attractive to bidders.

Grand Central's heartland is certainly under threat so they are going to have to be clever - filling their trains up at £20-£30 a pop may not be a sound long-term plan! I think the new services to Huddersfield, Bradford, Sunderland and Middlesbrough are the obvious ones being the largest towns just off the ECML without a direct London service by the franchised operator, so expansion to these places makes sense in its own right rather than primarily as an attempt to kill off GC, and it's innovation like this which makes for an atrractive bid.

No similar threat to Hull Trains as the franchised operator already serves the whole of FHT's route, and the service level offered by FHT is perhaps adequate for the customer. The proposed Huddersfield service, for example, is one a day each way which is consistent with Hull today.

I wonder why a MK4 DVT set would look like with Virgin colours?
I guess an upgraded challenger livery would be put on the HSTs.

If it works I can see that this would be more popular than fighting your way to the buffet and waiting in a queue of people not being able to see prices until they are asked for their order and taking an age to decide what to have.

Market research done by both NEX EC and later on by East Coast, suggests a large number of passengers are reluctant to, or will not, leave their seats with their luggage and possessions unattended and go to a counter or buffet.

On the Czech pendy's in Second you can order hot food by asking the catering staff when the trolley come's around or by pressing a button on the overhead luggage rack for service. Well even if you don't have the call button should be able to do something similar in the UK.

I agree that it's a sad day but I do think it should be successful and couldn't have gone to more deserving winners

There are more deserving winners, ie DOR, who have done very well running the East Coast for the past 5 years. The fact that this is being done less than 6 months before a general election was an act of spite by the Tory government.

Some key questions
1) Will the cost of 'Anytime' fares go through the roof like Standard Open fares did when Virgin took over the West Coast route ?
2) If Virgin / Stagecoach aren't awarded an extension when the eight years is up, will Beardy and his cronies go running to the courts, like they did with the West Coast a couple of years ago ?

That's about the level of discussion I'm seeing on Twitter though. "I don't like Virgin because their trains smell!".

In reality, I doubt much will change with the trains- we'll have the existing Mallard refurb until the Insanely Expensive Project carriages arrive. The fares, on the other hand, will sky-rocket. McLoughlin was on the Today Programme saying Stagecoach will be paying £3.3bn in premiums over the length of the franchise, someone's going to have to pay for that and I doubt it will be Brian. Given that they've committed to cutting the Anytime fare (that nobody buys anyway), I'm assuming the Advance price tiers will be having quite a bit of upwards revision come March.

There's no need to cry, they're replacing the East Coast Rewards scheme with Nectar points.

Nectar is rubbish. With the First Trains Nectar scheme, you spend £250 on train fares to get £2.50 off you next shop.

East Coast Rewards is better. Spend £220 and get a free standard class train ticket anywhere on East Coast Trains.

As someone from Lincoln I am very pleased with this result. It was DOR who binned the 6 x daily Lincoln services and so this is an improvement. Not before time

At the end of the day, if Stagecoach are paying the government lots of money to run the service, then that will help pay for the infrastructure improvements across the network...

I presume they will try and replicate the Pendolino ambiance by blanking out half of each window on the existing Mk4s :)

Well maybe but then they could start pricing themselves out of the market, I'm already using the coach much more from Leeds to London simply because its substancially cheaper, especially if you want to go with only a few days notice.

No, they will be reduced 10%. Read the thread.

Actually, the commitment is that Anytime fares on "long distance journeys" to/from London Kings Cross and Stevenage will be cut by 10%. There's no commitment about Anytime tickets on other flows that East Coast set the price for.

Yes and I expect the use of 5 Car Sets and Bi-modes makes it much more feasible to run services to these new destinations and increased services to those destinations that currently only get a token service.

It depends how you perceive the market.

Stagecoach own the East Coast franchise, the West Coast franchise and the East Midlands franchise, meaning finding a competitor train company is a challenge.

So you decide to take the coach. Guess who owns Megabus?

Some interesting stuff (different ways of getting to Wearside and Teesside than existing Grand Central services).

And, thankfully and end to the "you can't run franchise x if you already run franchise y" nonsense that we keep seeing brought up (or the "First Group were promised East Coast as consolation prize for losing West Coast/ ScotRail" conspiracy theory guff).

No additional services to Dundee/ Aberdeen, no Scarborough services (as consolation for them losing their TPE services to Manchester/ Liverpool), no "Sheffield via Retford" (something that Virgin proposed around the Millennium time), no bi-hourly Lincoln service, no "Manchester via Huddersfield" service (just Leeds - Huddersfield) - a few rumours don't seem to have come true.

Worth reiterating that the "...but DOR paid a premium, why are we paying a private company instead" argument falls down in the face of the fact that Stagecoach are paying £3.3bn of premium over eight years, compared to £1bn over five years premium from DOR).

Of course the Enthusiast reaction will either be "they've overbid, so they'll be handing the keys back" or "they've underbid and we'd have got more premium with public ownership - the private sector can't win in some people's eyes.

I say that because a lot of people's minds were made up before hand (regardless of what was in the actual bid). E.g. the Mick Cash quote in the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...oach-east-coast-inter-city-rail-franchise-win

While domestic public ownership puts money back into the coffers that can be reinvested in our railways, the private operators, overwhelmingly owned and controlled by European state rail outfits, suck out colossal sums in subsidies and profits – that’s what privatisation means

...don't worry about the fact that this private sector bid will pay *more* into Government coffers than DOR did, Mick;) Still, don't let facts get in the way of ideology.

We did well with this one, page 4 before "what colour will the trains be!!" Kleenex time....

I'm a bit disappointed by the thread - I still have "IEP will smell of poo" and "does this mean 350s on the ECML" until I have Forum Bingo!

True - and GC can't complain about "competition" if the dominant operator decides not to roll over and cede market share.

With East Coast (VEC? SEC?) actually running to Huddersfield (rather than Mirfield/ Brighouse) that could take a big chunk of the Kirklees trade from Grand Central, depending on the timing of the service.

Since there are practically no places where you'd consider a journey to London via the ECML, MML and WCML, that's irrelevant.

If you are travelling from Newcastle or Liverpool or Leicester then the fact that another railway line is run by the same company is irrelevant.

We cope with one company running all services from Brighton to London, or Swindon to London or Ipswich to London, after all.

(and Megabus are trivially small compared to National Express, but don't let that spoil your rant)

Heres hoping its a disaster and a massive failure.

DOR runs very well and it is spiteful blind Tory ideology behind this.

Oh dear what a silly comment - why on Earth would you like to see it fail? So you think a Labour Government would give it to someone else? I doubt it very much, nothing to do with the Tories VT/Stagecoach put in a better bid - get over it!

I tend to take National Express coaches , and would prefer the train but the coach prices are extremely competitive, but anyway the other franchises are going to come up for renewal in the next few years, the West Coast franchise being somewhat irrelevent to East Coast England destinations anyway, and where I live I can opt for GC instead, assuming GC can survive this new competition.

Ditto Bradford (not that GC does an awful lot from there anyway) and the Dewsbury area, which sees passengers making their way to Mirfield. Add to this Middlesbrough/Thornaby, which will extract from GC's North East route.

Try Huddersfield to London Terminals in a Journey Planner, it'll give you options using:
TPE + VT
TPE + EC
NT + EC
TPE + HT
NT + EM
NT + GC

If only there were options using LM and Chiltern as well you'd have the complete range.

There are plenty of places where you'd consider a journey to London via the ECML, MML or WCML though. Scotland is the most obvious example. Most of Yorkshire would choose between the ECML or MML, depending on price, and in the west of the county the WCML is a choice too. It's not really any slower travelling Euston-Manchester-Halifax/Huddersfield than travelling via Leeds. From Halifax, the off-peak ticket via Manchester is cheaper than the super off-peak ticket via Leeds.

We cope with one company running all services from Brighton to London, or Swindon to London or Ipswich to London, after all.

Brighton to London will see significant price rises when the franchises are properly merged. Ipswich to London has seen significant price rises following the merger of Anglia and Great Eastern.

The TOC "copes" with running all the services, you're right in that respect. Trebles all round!

Megabus are trivially small compared to National Express, but don't let that spoil your rant

Are they? Are they really? This must come as something of a shock to Stagecoach who trumpet Megabus as a huge success.

Note Stagecoach don't ever put their name all over trains. It's South West Trains not Stagecoach South West and Virgin isn't branded West Coast Trains with the wording a joint venture by Virgin and Stagecoach appearing under the logo.
