If there is a service disruption on the southern end of the WCML out of Euston for any reason, it's always London Midland's Tring stoppers that are the most likely to be cancelled.

I was wondering what services are the first to be cancelled out of other mainline stations during disruptions?

I am pretty sure on the east coast mainline that the first one to be canceled would be the leeds train

On the ECML it's one of the Leeds trains for EastCoast and, I think, the fast Peterboroughs for Great Northern.

Hampton Court on the SWML (I've no idea what the first one to go on the Barnes line is however).

As a rule of thumb, it'll be the shortest service (ie. LM Tring stoppers or EC Leeds services), or services that are duplicated (GN Peterborough services).

If there's a problem on the SWML, another change well up the list is that West of England Line services only operate between Exeter and Basingstoke.

Yep. It's so that services don't miss their slots on the long single track sections west of Salisbury (which are pretty tightly timed so delays can balloon massively)

The Cardiff Central - London Paddington service is usually one of the first cancelled when where is disruption anywhere along that line.

The Severn Beach line used to be REALLY bad for cancelled services in the past, if FGW was ever a train short, they just used to pull one off this line. However local campaigning has largely put and end to this.

Not exactly the same as a whole service cancellation but IMO a fairly high amount of FGW services get cancelled at Worcester Shrub Hill instead of continuing to Great Malvern.

On the Brighton main line, the first change is Gatwick Express dropping to half-hourly. When two trains per hour are extended to Brighton throughout the day, next year, I imagine the Gatwick terminators will be culled first in times of disruption.

Also Dorking, with passengers asked to use Southern. Leaves Worcester Park to Ewell West with 2tph.
The "Windsor Lines" side are the Hounslow circulars, leaving Barnes Bridge to Hounslow at 2tph and no direct services between those and Whitton to Mortlake, which is the case on Sunday too.

Any disruption between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, the following usually happens:
Stoppers do not run.
Shrewsbury trains terminate at Wolverhampton, sometimes ATW terminate at Shrewsbury.
Liverpool trains are diverted via Bescot and can be terminated at Crewe (from either direction) if needed to get back on timetable.
Virgin and Cross Country services divert avoiding Wolves direct to Stafford. Virgin can terminate a service at Wolves and XC can terminate at Birmingham, with both using another set to re-start the service on time.

And the through Padd - Cheltenham service gets truncated to start/terminate at Swindon.

Others that I know of:

Euston: VT Euston Manchester and VT Euston Birmingham cut back from 3 an hour to 2 an hour
Glasgow QS-Edinburgh (via Falkirk High) - Cut back from every 15 mins to every 30 mins

In both cases above SSO's issued as appropriate.

FGW 10 50 Great Malvern to Brighton is similar both ends. Doesn't reach Great Malvern but starts from Worcester as already mentioned and regularly fails to arrive at Brighton.

I do find it slightly odd how the Brighton/Southampton/Warminster/Westbury - Great Malvern trains terminate early at Worcester Shrub Hill, yet for the following journey back down to Brighton/Westbury/Weymouth, the trains start at Worcester Foregate Street?

I'm not that familiar with Worcester so just wondered if there was any reason for it - Presumably it would run empty between the stations as it is not feasible to terminate many trains at Foregate Street if there is turnaround time of more than a few mins?

Yeah, and then they make all MK stoppers all stations........<(

Of course - usually, the most frequent are the ones with the most stops. Tring takes about 40 minutes, but calls at 8 stations. Shift them out of the way, it releases an awful lot of capacity for Virgin drivers to see what the slow lines look like.

There is nowhere to hold trains at Foregate St so it would sit at Shrub Hill until time to go Foregate St for departure time from there.

Really ? I've NEVER known that to happen.

I was about to say LM Crewe - Liverpool used to get cut down to hourly at the slightest provocation, but that hasn't been so bad recently.

Through Stoke-on-Trent the main 2 that have joint priority are the Virgin and CrossCountry then London Midland, then Northern and finally the East Midlands Trains.

With Northern Rail and East Midlands trains its not uncommon to have them waiting at Kidsgrove Junction, Stoke Junction or Platform 3, Crewe South Junction or Bartolamly Junction for late running Virgin, CrossCountry or London Midland trains even if the EMT or NT are on time.

At the first sign of bad weather SWT ditch the Ascot - Aldershots.

I do wonder if Stagecoach would far rather this line disappeared so passengers would be forced to use their local monopoly buses instead.

Being slightly cynical but it seems the Gatwick Cancellation only happens after everything via Redhill is cancelled. Been marooned with 100's of others many times at East Croydon for problems south of Three Bridges and watched Gatwick "empties" go through every 15 minutes.

If the problem is south of Three Bridges (towards Brighton), then the Gatwick Express will not be withdrawn. First option is one of the 'fast' Brighton's, the semi fast and the fast Thameslink, though the latter is rare due to having issues with berthing the stock at Brighton.
Where the Redhill line gets hit is with train crew travelling pass on the fast TL services to Three Bridges to relieve services from Horsham.
If the problem is west of a Crawley, then the Redhill line will get hit.
If the problem is on the Quarry line, then the Gatwick Express will be reduced, whilst stopping services via Redhill will have reduced stops at Coulsdon South and Merstham.

Any disruption anywhere on London Underground and the Bakerloo Line is cancelled north of Queens Park.

At Paddington the Greenford service often get cancelled if the problem is anywhere East of Southall. HEX may get reduced to half hourly, and the Connects often get cancelled. As has been said, the Padd - Cardiff service will get binned leaving the hourly Swansea in place an if it is significant disruption the Oxford fasts go to hourly.

Out of Manchester Piccadilly, it appears to usually be TPEs to the airport.
Either that, or they go wrong a lot...
