Am I right in saying I can buy an off peak priv to Shotton and an off peak virgin only ticket from Crewe to Lime Street and travel on the 17:07 out of Euston.

This will save me waiting for the 19:07

The SVS/SVR allow break of journey, with the only PM service barred being the 1610.

Euston - Shotton is valid via Crewe.

The VT Only CDR CRE - LIV is valid any time after 0900.

So to answer, absolutely yes.

Break of journey is permitted except where it is made clear when you buy your ticket that it's not. The booking clerk should, in theory, make it clear to you that the outward portion of a London - Shotton ticket does not permit break of journey. However the return portion of a Shotton - London ticket (ie, London - Shotton) does permit break of journey.

However this is all rather academic, as you are not breaking your journey at Crewe anyway!

The NRCoC states:
You can:
Start, break or resume your journey using trains on which your ticket is valid unless you are told about particular restrictions that apply to the use of your ticket. Note that you cannot break your journey except to change trains with Advance tickets.
In my experience, booking clerks rarely inform passengers of such restrictions on walk-up tickets, the above wording therefore arguably means the restriction does not apply.

The definition of breaking your journey is in Condition 16 on page 11 and makes it clear that you will be treated as breaking your journey if you leave a station after you start a journey except for one of the 3 reasons stated.

However that won't stop a small minority (there's one or two I've heard a lot about, but I've never encountered them) of desperate Guards claiming your ticket combination is invalid.

According to BRFares London to Shotton does permit BoJ.

No it doesn't, it says "Break of journey is not permitted on Outward Travel."

I have to say that this is not permitted in my view due to the prohibition on BoJ. Furthermore as VN is a pretty well-known restriction code that forbids break of journey on the outward portion, and Virgin TMs know this trick people play with stopping short on tickets to north Wales coast destinations, I don't think it is worth risking your PRIV for it, on the odd chance that you run into someone who takes this seriously.

The way around it is instead of buying a London Terminals - Shotton Off-Peak Single, buy a return in the opposite direction, a Shotton - London Terminals Off-Peak Return, for a princely sum of 25p extra, throw away the outward portion, and break your return journey at Crewe legitimately.
