Has anyone got an image of the class 158 in question? Flickr doesn't even have images at this stage!
Thanks,
Ross

It is currently at Philips Marsh having the old vinyls removed, the white is the base colour, the unit has not been painted white. It is aparently reminiscent of the old Alphaline livery* with pink doors etc.

A colleague of mine was having a nose around it today but I dont know if he took any pictures.

* yes I know that was silver but its close enough.

798 was never in Alphaline livery, it came straight down here from TPE in 2006/7

It could just be painted into the new plain blue livery....

By far the most likely. No information has been issued to suggest anything different and the Turbo fleet and recently refreshed Class 150s have been released in the current solid blue, with HST trailers currently being refurbed and outshopped in the usual colours.

He says there were lots of boxes of vinyl on the floor near it but he didnt look to see what was in them, they were scraping the glue off from the previous vinyls but the awkward bits had been painted blue so he reckons it is going into plain blue like the 150/1s, 150202 and 261!

Let us hope that the hideous pink colour goes.

Regarded as the best in the fleet four toilets more bike space etc no Richmond seating

However the carpets are sticking up and incredibly worn in places, paint work is chipped, toilets are pretty dismal and there are cracks on the seats which reflect their age

Perhaps new flooring will be fitted like that 150

It's a shame FGW don't have the operational flexibility to do a full refurb up to SWT standards of its west fleet. Personally I would like to see swt get the portsmouth - Cardiff route, although I don't blame the guys on the ground at all as I'm sure they try their best under the constraints they're bound by.

SWT get the Cardiff to Portsmouth work !

Are you totally over the moon mad !

IF they did that you would more or less close Westbury Depot at the drop of a hat, defiantly close Fratton and take a huge amount of work from Bristol!

So no, FGW to keep that work thanks. Maybe SWT should transfer some of their excuss DMUs to FGW ? I really don't know how a TOC with two sole diesel only routes can keep hold of such a fleet of DMUs!

No depot would close if SWT took over
Remember talk of wessex taking over West of England line services that would have been interesting

FGW Fratton sign two routes, Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff via Bristol, and Cosham to Brighton.
The Cardiff work and variations of it make up 95% of their work, SWT could cover this work by using Salisbury and Fratton Crewe already in place. Okay they'd be TUPE over to SWT.

The Brighton work also could be trandfered to SWT or even Southern.

But then you've got huge loses of work St Westbury and Bristol depot.
So to say no depot would close is a little untrue, as you wouldn't have Fratton with two depots.

Regards to West of England line, SWT Salisbury would TUPE to Great Western in whole or spilt down the middle creating a GW and SW depot at Sailsbury, as no GW depot sign WoE line.
The same happened when Central Trains at Birmingham New Street was cut up into two new operators. The lucky ones went to XC, and the remaining went to LM.

For the record 158798 is being repainted in the DMU standard 150261 style plain Jane FGW colours.

Bother. I was so hoping for Chocolate and Cream.

Haha so was I ;)

Why are FGW choosing this Plain Blue over the Local Lines Vinyl'd version? Doesn't seem to make much sense to make an (essentially) un-branded version of their livery. Does look a lot cleaner though.

Thanks,
Ross

The vinyled units look awful at the moment terribly grim this will make them A LOT smarter as well as improving the bodywork

If as you say it is being painted what are all the boxes of vinyls on the floor for?

The boxes were about a foot square and 8ft long so if they are the cycle markers they should be quite easy to see.

Well hopefully putting local line branding back on top that way the bodywork is better protected and the one shade looks much smarter. this will allow the place names to stand out more

FCC 321s and 180s have dark blue paint but retain vinyls on top

I thought that the bodywork was the whole reason that they plainly painted the ex-LM / LO 150s? Didn't they find that the vinyl on some of the 150/2s actually contributed to the corrosion of the bodywork? Mind you, if they're ex-Wessex trains, they're likely not in the best of nick bodywise to begin with....

I think plain blue, on the local fleet, is certainly the way forward. Think about it - 150261? Came back in plain blue. The refurbished turbo? Plain blue. Local lines is finished.

(Watch me be proven wrong now!)

798 is not being painted, it is being vinyled as it was previously it's just that the vinyls will be plain blue.

Saw it this morning. It's in traffic now. Only hit a glimpse but it appears to be fully wrapped all over like the old Wessex advertising liveries. Looks very smart!

It's on the Taunton - Cardiffs today.

Why put it on the Taunton - Cardiff service if the promotional advertising is for Gunwharf Quays?
Surely it should be on the Portsmouth - Cardiff run?

The advertising agency who commissioned this, should ask for their money back. ;)
