Hello,

My name is Ed Greig and I am currently undertaking the journey from Portugal to Vietnam by train, recording a programme for Radio 4. I started in Vila Real de Santa Antonio and I am heading for Ho Chi Minh City, currently I have got as far as Warsaw in Poland. I probably should have posted here earlier for advice, as I think I'd have tried to make my way to the Schwebebahn, but I thought the trip might be of interest to enthusiasts. The website for it is http://www.edrail.com where you can track progress and see photos of all of the trains I have taken so far (I've lost count!). Anyway, it has been great browsing this forum and I hope you enjoy the site.

(said kindly)I hate you.

That sounds so great.

Longer than the previous attempt I heard of (Brussels to Hong Kong)

I will be doing Manchester to Hong Kong, in 2010. But I'll be disqualified, as I'll be catching a few ferries (about four) along the way. As a result, it won't be totally by rail.

Cor, what a trip! Does this include any steam hauled services, or have they all been taken over by diesel and electric in these rare countries now?

I'm booked for Liverpool - Lhasa, China in December, all by train:

LIVERPOOL LONDON (Virgin Trains)
LONDON - BRUSSELS (Eurostar)
BRUSSELS - COLOGNE (Thalys)
COLOGNE - WARSAW (Jan Kiepura Sleeper)
WARSAW - MOSCOW (Polonez sleeper train)
MOSCOW - BEIJING (Trans-siberian)
BEIJING - LHASA

& return...

Total return cost for trains: £690, and that's in premium sleepers, and 1st class LIV - EUS!

Any tips for the Trans-Sib though? What do you do for so long?

Also, anyone got any idea of mileage for this, surely got to be one of the longest journeys in the world?
