There was an unpublished story by Agatha Christie called, 'Murder on the Sheffield-Hope Valley-Manchester Stopper.' Hercule Poirot should have been in it, but because of engineering works, the driver's instructions were, 'Miss Marple'.

I've got to get my broken down car to a small town in East Cheshire.

Marple?

No, I expect she'll just sit in the back and let us do all the work

Agatha Christie died well before Cheshire East was invented. She died not longer after the 1970s council re-organisation which took what was the Cheshire town of Marple and put it in the newly formed Greater Manchester.

People could still describe Marple as being in East Cheshire (i.e. eastern Cheshire) before Cheshire East was invented.

The correct postal address for Marple since at least 1968 is

Marple
STOCKPORT
Cheshire
SK6 ***
(1968 being the approximate year that the Stockport area was postcoded)

Ah - I see you are referring to the little-known fact that the "4.50pm from Paddington" actually had the working title of the "5.17pm from Sheffield Midland"
