How does Section 19(c) apply if trains are rerouted due to planned engineering works?

For instance you can normally travel London Kings Cross - Cambridge with a combination of a season Zones 1-4 Travelcard + an Oakleigh Park-Cambridge single. However this weekend the services will be using the route via Hertford North so will not pass through Oakleigh Park. If you had the ticket combination above would it be valid?

It depends. TOCs generally seem allow things like that to be valid on diverted services during engineering works (provided you're not taking the mickey), but I don't think they have to. An example was a couple of years back where TPE services were diverted along the Calder Valley line. Rather than have long distance travellers (with split tickets) clog up the replacement buses, they allowed the passengers to use the diverted trains.

With a Travelcard, a 'boundary zone' ticket avoids this issue.

I don't think there would be a problem with it in practice. The route taken isn't publically advertised, so someone who turns up at King's Cross and sees a train calling first stop Stevenage may have no idea that it is going to go via Hertford.

We're talking about Oakleigh Park to Cambridge, where it's always the same price?

Yes, but someone else reading this wanting to do a similar thing towards Kent might be in for a surprise.

The precise answer to this question is undefined, so you are unlikely to receive a definitive answer, only opinions.

But I am in no doubt that such a ticket should be accepted and, equally in no doubt that in practice it would be accepted.

I'm not convinced it's not defined - it is stipulated in the condition that the combination of tickets have to cover the entire journey. Based on that, the combination would not be compliant if travel is via Hertford North, though they would be valid on the rail replacement service via Oakleigh Park. That said, I expect the tickets would be accepted.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a ticket from Oakleigh Park - I'd buy it from BZ4. If the stations in the OP are a proxy for a similar situation elsewhere, the same applies.

As an aside, in this case a ticket from BZ4 gives the additional flexibility of travelling on the West Anglia line as well as Great Northern, which a ticket from a named station doesn't.

Though in this particular case, the fare from Oakleigh Park is actually from a cluster which includes Winchmore Hill - Crews Hill, Oakleigh Park - Hadley Wood, Edmonton Green - Enfield Town/Turkey Street and Ponders End - Enfield Lock.

I would expect either:

No 19C split acceptance at all (staff training failure)
or
19C split acceptance for either then original or the diverted route. There may be great opportunities to take the **** :)

The southern limit of my season ticket is Potters Bar. So I usually buy a Potters Bar - London travelcard when going in to London.
This combination has always been accepted if the trains are diverted via Hertford. Though to be honest when the trains are on diversion in my experience it is rare for the tickets to be checked en route anyway as the staff are busy assisting at stations, so the relevant ticket was only shown at the original station & leaving Kings Cross.

I've edited my post to avoid any misunderstanding.

I would point out that until I joined this forum I had never heard of a Boundary Zone ticket and yet they do exactly what you need them to do! It would be useful if they were explicitly mentioned during all the announcements and warnings about travelling beyond the Oyster zones.

For the occasional user like myself who needs to "extend" a daily Travelcard, they remove the need to worry about catching a train that stops at the station you've named on your additional ticket.
