London Midland Revenue and Security Manager

Hello all,
A friend of mine has asked if this position is an entry level role in revenue protection or whether it is open to those with experience of the role already.

The fact that the job title is 'manager' and the person spec is looking for knowledge of network, ticketing and legislation suggest to me it's not a role for an inexperienced trainee, but then I'm a novice and not in the industry, so I don't know.

Can anyone advise?

Don't be put off by that. A lot of TOCs use manager in job titles, simply as a way of getting round paying overtime - MS Grade contracts generally are 37.5 hours, flat week, and you often end up doing much more.

That said, these sound like rather fun jobs, if this is your kinda preferred work background.

The 'Manager' role has essentially replaced the RPI grade. I believe at the moment it's made up of revenue staff who haven't taken redundancy, jumped over to Guard or gone to Booking Offices. It's essentially the old RPI grade but with worse conditions...

It's probably a good job for someone from outside the industry who doesn't know any different, but it ain't the grade that it was.

I've applied for this too. I used to be an RPI on £12kpa back in 2000 when FCC was WAGN and left to join the army. No I'm out i am looking at getting back into RPI work, as i loved it! All I had with WAGN was 2 written tests and an interview.

What are the tests and selection procedure like for London Midland in particular?

More interestingly the role play scenarios?

Any help I am sure will be grateful from those who get through shortlisting.

This job has been filled. The "positive spin" came through as an e-mail today, telling us all about how he will be the saviour of the company, blah blah blah.

Be warned also, if you are thinking of applying for one of the new RPI jobs, their T's & C's are a lot worse than they were, with conditions such as - no incremented pay for Saturdays, sundays and rest days. No commission on tickets sold, with the wage increased to "offset" this. However, what they are getting in new salary is nowhere near what some of the guys were pulling in before. Some used to earn more than a Guard's basic, with some pushing on towards the drivers' basic. No longer will this be the case.

He is the Head of Revenue & Security, the positions the OP talks about are the Revenue & Security Manager roles that are underneath the Head of Revenue & Security, but above the new RPI's.

Although these 'Revenue & Security Manager' roles are basically RPIs but with management responsibilities like on call etc. It's all very confusing...

Yes, that's what the folks up here have been describing it as too. Super in what way, I'm not sure...

Is that the 5x Milton Keynes, the 2x Birmingham and the position in crewe which have been filled? I know of the Lead Revenue & Security Manager based in crew, but i did not apply for that one. It was the MK one I applied for, and have not had notification of how the shortlisting went. Dont know how they can be filled yet, considering closing date was only 6 days ago...

If they employ someone with no previous experience of the railway then that will most likely be true, until they're up to speed.

My opinion, but I think RPIs are made to concentrate too much on trivial junk like routing validity nowadays.

Pulled a near perfect quality fake season ticket today, been used for months, missed by perhaps 100-200 staff. Sadly, nowadays the basics of the RPI job are not valued by most train companies, opting for staff who spot someone using a 50p cheaper route whilst missing real criminals.

Yeah - attended the interview but was unsuccessful No feedback either. I'm applying for a couple of conductor vacancies atm, one with LM.

Seen the RPI/M/Zs/whatevers at Liverpool last month.

They'd blockaded platform 8 as a train arrived. They blocked the station end of 8, and stood people around bits of 7, looking to stop anyone who was sneaking off.

Flawed and ill thought out as I found myself the wrong side of a hastily assembled gateline. Asked for a ticket by a quite rude person in LM uniform, and all I had done was walked up to visit the newly located cashpoints, after getting off a train on P5.

Total mess. Told NRs manager.

No, I went for an interview for the position at Crewe a couple of months ago. I didn't have any follow-up from the interview for several weeks despite sending a couple of follow-up emails. Eventually I was informed I hadn't made the cut :-x
