That and the parents not being able to hand out discipline, like a swack across the backside. I got several & it never did me any harm.

You wait until you get to my age and you'll think just the same. I don't trust kids/teenagers one jot.

Your generation need to learn: Trust & respect are earned, NOT bestowed.

You will get my trust & respect, if you show respect to me first.
You respect those in charge (like the train crews) & your elders.

From experience of volunteering in the youth sector for more than forty years I can understand how potentially intimidating and threatening two or more rowdy youths can be. That said, in my nonprofessional opinion, situations can mostly be controlled if you assume that one or more of the group are reasonable, rational human beings just as equally intimidated by their peers into joining in as you by their behaviour. It’s a matter of judgement best done from an open minded position and not one of tarring all with the same brush.

For me it all stems from the lack of discipline in schools that is to blame.

But there cant be any discipline in schools because there is nothing they can do to the kids!
Kid mouths off at teacher so teacher mouths off back, who is in the wrong?
Kid slaps a teacher and teacher slaps the kid, who is in the wrong?

A clip round the earhole or the cane never did anyone any harm but oh we cant do that now because it is child abuse!
But its okay for those same kids to go round abusing everyone else and boy do they scream when somebody stands up to them!

I am talking about, maybe 5% of teenagers/kids, the other 95% have been raised by parents instead of being dragged up!

If you're back in the classroom next week remember what you wrote above

But that doesn't mean that they are still the majority, like it had been suggested above.

I'm young, so of course I'm going to stand up against sweeping generalisations.

I'm not denying that there are youngsters out there like that, I've been confronted myself, but I'm not going to say they are the majority of the travelling youth who use public transport.

There was certainly no mention made of anything but "the minority" in my posting to which you have responded to in the posting shown above and certainly no sweeping generalisations of any kind in my posting. You are 19...I am 50 years older at 69, so I tend to put a great deal of prior thought in replies when I decide to make posting responses.

I was originally responding to a post which made it very clear that they felt it was the majority of youngsters, and therefore that is what I was referencing to.

Apologies for the confusion, but not entirely sure what age has to do with my ability to post a thought out response... :)

I see this has gone off onto one of those "old vs young" debates/bashing again. A minority will always give the majority a bad name - that will always happen and thats all that needs saying on it.

On topic, hopefully the victim makes a full recovery and the 2 attackers are punished.

What about when those elders are clearly morons? Was I supposed to respect the crazy racist guy who didn't believe in Shakespeare who started talking to me at Drayton Green?

The concept of respecting one's elders is really quite deeply flawed. Respect people who deserve one's respect. I certainly don't respect people who make sweeping generalisations about large groups of people.

Respect "elders", yes - that is outdated. There are people somewhat younger than myself, for instance, who are more "worldly wise" than I am due to life experience, and to whom I sometimes turn to for advice. And there are people older than me who sometimes ask me for help. Thankfully I am a few years too young to have had corporal punishment (which I do believe is a form of child abuse) meted out at school, to which I am very grateful. Detentions were the sanction at our school.

However I definitely believe that in a public service or business situation, customers or users of the service need to respect the staff - as long as the staff respect them. I sometimes get the impression that in the Thatcherite "customer is always right" culture we live in, this is not always the case.

Mutual respect should be the way things are run.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with all this. You've put it into words much better than I did ;)

@Paul Sidorczuk: not entirely sure what you mean by this, but my point is that one should respect people based on their character and whether or not said respect is mutual, as opposed to their age alone. If someone younger than I am deserves respect, I will give them it, but if they don't, I won't - simples ;)
