Has something occurred upon my computer, as French suddenly seems to be the chosen language in the majority these banner-strip advertisements ? Is the knowledge of my fluidity in that language something that has been suddenly known to these advertisers ?

I believe the adverts are based on your browsing history on all sites. If you've been looking at French websites, or researching any French topics, then they may well present you with adverts in that language.

Thank you for this response. Indeed, I have been researching much in the historical period 1250 to 1470 of France in recent days on French websites.

Any time that you see this icon (circled in blue) in the corner of an advertisement, you know that it is placed there by Google AdChoices. RailUK get money from Google for having that ad there, not directly from the companies which are advertising through AdChoices.

It can actually be useful at times. This one for CyclingDeal.com.au is what's at the top of this forum thread as I view it now. I've bought stuff from them in the past, but I first heard of them because their ads got served to me by Google after I'd been looking around on a few competing online cycling stores. I had a look, and for the stuff I wanted they turned out to be better than the places I was looking, and for a bonus they're Australian owned and operated instead of my money going offshore.

Almost as useless as the ones I had earlier - a Cyclingdeal.com.au ad (a store I already use) and the rather misguided ad for the Justin Timberlake concert - no thanks!

The most interesting ones I've seen have been for Anaconda (an outdoor/sport retailer here) and Wiggle.co.uk (an online cycling store) where the ads have had four panels showing items I had recently browsed or were among the "other users also bought" products on product pages I had recently browsed.

Some of the ads on here are not AdChoices, but DoubleClick (which is still owned by Google) instead. DoubleClick is more often used by major companies with larger advertising budgets, because it is almost exclusively targeted by location (reading your IP address and, if available, other location data) instead of being targeted according to your web history.

DoubleClick ads never get the location right on my iPad if I'm using 3G data, because the IP address is fixed to a location in Sydney (the location of my mobile data provider) and I don't permit DoubleClick to use Location Services (GPS and 3G/WiFi triangulation) to find out my actual location.

In France, all of my adverts at the top were in French, as others have described. Occasionally they still are as I have to visit several french sites for my studies.

If it is through a proxy, it is likely that sites think the proxy server is located in a different country, thus displaying such. That was the problem with us but the suppliers fixed it...eventually!

Many advertisers allow you to opt-out of targeted advertising.
You still get ads, but they aren't (or shouldn't be) based on your browsing history.

I find it a bit less annoying to get generic ads. I particularly dislike targeted ads advertising exactly the product I was just looking at, but is actually out of stock!

Has anyone any idea how long these Gallic advertisements will normally continue to form a major part of those that appear upon my monitor ? They still are as regular as when I first opened this thread earlier this week.

Better still run that ccleaner programme I told you about once a week just to keep everything tidy.

Done...matter cleared....Someone tells me that someone of Facebook has complained of the same problem that I had, where when you log off everying is normal, but when you log back in, all adverts are in French.

As long as you use the box bottom left to show a picture instead there are no adverts.

Can't understand people complaining about adverts when they choose to have them by choice.

Yes puzzling, but simply stick one of the pictures up below and you'll never see French or any other language.
