Stunt today with a guy taking 1 min 20 seconds to run from Mansion House to Cannon Street (and beat the tube )

What other tube stop combinations might this work for?

I guess Cannon Street to Monument as well.

Mainline I guess is less likely - although City Thameslink and Blackfriars might work if a train is held at the signal!

Ever got stuck on the Tube and thought it might have been quicker to walk?

One Londoner has proved that travelling on foot could be the answer to commuter hell.

James Heptonstall filmed his 380m sprint from Mansion House to Cannon Street station while his friend Noel Carroll took the Circle Line Tube for the same journey.

He made it back on to the train with seconds to spare and was applauded by his fellow passengers.

The pair created a video of the stunt, which included climbing 75 steps and passing through two ticket barriers, using GoPro cameras and uploaded it to YouTube last month.

Mansion House to Cannon Street is about 300m according to Google, and City Thameslink to Blackfriars is the same distance. Cannon Street to Monument came around 350m.

If you include the access and egress time and waiting for a train, there must be plenty of station pairs where running or even walking would be quicker between the respective street entrances. Start on the platforms and the opposite probably applies.

Covent Garden and nearby stations have notices advising people to walk there rather than using the Tube for such a short journey, particularly as there are long waits for the lifts at busy times.

Seriously though, well done to him, I think this is the first time I have seen the runner use the stairs and not the person travelling on the train, to do what he did was no mean feat! I tip my cap to him.

I find it worrying that the Standard can't check which stations are next to one another on a tube map.

You could probably run from Liskeard to Coombe Junction Halt and beat the train (the run is downhill all the way).

Using an S7 this morning I timed a doors open at Mansion House, wait for CIS to complete, doors close, arrive Cannon Street, doors open, time of 1m.16sec.

Blackfriars to City TL is definitely doable. Make sure it's a 12 car 377, get off the front doors at Blackfrjars and on the back doors at City. The 377s take an age to transfer DC>AC at City and wait there about 90 seconds.

It would have to be 1T96 though, as the other two evening 12 car services have at least 3 mins dwell at Blackfriars and that would be cheating!

The initial challenge above required reentry at the same set of doors. That's going to make quite a difference on that run.

Only if you went up the main road, there is a little ally on the other side - blackfriars lane then waithman street - or perhaps only/especially if the emergency back door at city were to be open lol

I'm 66, but I think I could beat the Circle from Paddington to Edgware Road walking sedately (i.e. my normal pace), assuming I got off it from Hammersmith and caught it as it terminated!

You coukd currently get from euston to kings cross by road faster than the tube at peak times
