Hi

I'm quite a purist for 150s, EMUs and DMUs of that and similar eras

Where can I pick up Gen of 150 diagrams that involve the West Coast way line

The only possible workings are the two Brighton workings operated by FGW. Not sure either is booked 150 though, but IIRC the afternoon trains can produce one.

SNAP!

I have already answered it.

I assume he was writing it while you posted, hence the snap at the end ;)

That was my assumption too.

Anyway, the morning Brighton to Great Malvern has turned out a 150 before, was 150921 or 150927 when I was last down that way earlier this year. It is of course unusual not to have a 158 on the FGW services to Brighton but it just depends on what 150 and 158 availability is like on a particular day.

After all, a 150+153 pairing (want to know which DMUs? Find my long post of observations from 11th September on 'Trains you've seen working' ;)) was on Portsmouth to Cardiff and vice versa services on Thursday 11th September, indicating low 158 availability.

I'm surprised that didn't result in one of the usual '153s are banned east of Southampton' threads then...

The 153 had nothing to do with low 158 availability. It was merely carrying out a 153 strengthening diagram - Bristol-Cardiff-Westbury.

Correct. The 150 was as a result of low availability, not the 158. The 1630 Cardiff to Portsmouth is booked for 158+153, not 150+153.

The 1930 Cardiff to Portsmouth was also a 150 vice a 158 too.

I believe a few of the 158/9s are having their C6 exam (I think it's C6?) at the moment. 158952 is currently in two car formation and was working the diagram starting with the 0517 Gloucester to Southampton on Thursday. Although I don't know why FGW didn't place the 2 car 158 as opposed to the 2 car 150. If only two cars were available for both Cardiff to Portsmouth services then it would have been far more appropriate to have used the 158 as they're better suited to long-distance journeys, but of course I know displacement of stock can occur, hence the 150 instead.

It's not that easy to get them in a suitable place to transpose them if they are poles apart, i.e. Gloucester starter and a Westbury starter. In an ideal world, Yes but not always possible.

Didn't a 153 (or 155) cause damage to one of the platforms at Shoreham-by-Sea many years ago?
When the 155s were split into 153s the steps leading to and from the additional (cab) on the 153s were out of gauge for some locations.

True, but the thought of a 150 for a near 4 hour journey is enough to make your skin crawl!

Even if I'm hopping from Cardiff to Newport or Bridgend I will always wait for a 175 or a HST.

Going incredibly off topic here, but I can't seem to find an answer to this question, and I didn't want to start a new thread, but is 153399 still around?
