I`m a bit behind on learning about Cross Country Trains ditching their Quiet Coaches, but I have to say it`s really rather depressed me. The tinny overspill from other passengers headphones is something I find intensely irritating, it`s actually enough to ruin a journey for me. How I yearn for the pre Walkman/I Pod days, it seems a long lost heaven. It`s true, you really don`t know what you`ve got till it`s gone....
XC`s excuse that the Quiet Coaches "create confrontation situations for the train managers" is pathetic, if they really are managers they should manage not just "cop out". How far are they going to go with that one anyway ? Let yob passengers do what they want, much less confrontation for the "train managers" there....
The question is, if I want to get away from other passengers noise particularly headphone overspill, what should I do ?

I'm with the guards on this one & will make their lives easier to get rid especially on 4-car Voyagers. Now to eliminate the late seat reservation idea.

They might as well scrap QUIET coaches as few people take any notice anyway, nearly everyone assumes that they can answer/initiate mobile phone calls anywhere at anytime.
Many people are literally not aware of Quiet zones or assume it doesn't refer to mobile phones or human conversation.
I was on a train recently with a large group of Chinese people (from China, tourists I assume), they talked very loudly and shouted very loudly to each other down the carriage, they were actually very polite and well behaved, I assume this is simply a cultural norm in China.
This is not an issue just involving 'drunks', 'youths' etc, most of the offenders I see on SW trains are nice middle class ladies/professional business types etc.
As the world changes, perhaps we should just be grateful that at least smoking is now socially unacceptable but noise is normal?

AIUI there's still absolutely no evidence that the original story (and hence the thread title) had anything to do with SWT?

Typical BBC local radio. They borrow stories from neighbouring stations and no-one will have factored in that XC only run a token single service each way to/from Surrey. Most of the local listeners probably wondered WTF they were on about...

Can you even call it a service when it gets cancelled & started from Reading on a fairly regular basis. XC should provide a decent hourly service or get out.

To be honest I find the noise from headphone overspill even more annoying than mobile phone conversations..... Quite apart from anything else at least mobile phone conversations eventually come to an end, people listening to music on their (non personal) personal stereos can go on for the whole journey !

Wear some ear plugs? Should cancel out the noise from random music, but should still be able to hear any guard/PIS announcements.

I`ve tried ear plugs but just find that the ears automatic gain control just makes them more sensitive, so you can still hear the offending noise. Plus the fact they`re not that comfortable, I find it harder to relax whilst wearing ear plugs, maybe partly because I`m annoyed I`m being forced to do so ! ? !

Getting rid of guard`s duties which they may find onerous but which improve the travelling environment for passengers, how far do you want to go with that idea......
