London to Plymouth

Hi guys, quick question, I am planning on going from London to Plymouth on Fri 28th Nov and returning on Sun 30th with my other half. I've had a quick look for prices for a couple of weeks before as it won't let me book that far in advance and it comes to £180 or so return for us both. Now my question is, as we both have Priv cards, can anyone tell me how to work out what the priv fare will be for us each with the new Priv off peak entitlements that come in next month? Its either that or potentially megatrain to exeter and priv to plymouth from there. Or drive, I could just drive, but last time I drove from Essex to Plymouth my car broke down at Bristol and we spent the night being chopped and changed from one AA tow truck to the other!

A quarter of the appropriate public walk-up fare.

If you can travel at times the Super Off Peak Return is valid, that's a quarter of £92 each, so £46 for two.

Unless you are getting a taxi/bus/lift to Paddington, you might be better off buying from Stratford instead. That'll be an extra 75p each.

£67.75 is the price of an Any Permitted STD PRV SOR from London Terminals to Plymouth.

No off-peak return is available on this flow.


You could decrease this price by buying one or both portions 'via Honiton' but this would increase the journey time by about 30-45 minutes each way.

The Super Off-Peak Return from London Terminals is £92 each, so £23 on PRIV, and from Stratford it is £95 each, so £23.75 on PRIV as yorkie alluded to above.

At these prices I think you should just go FGW direct.

Apologies, yes, I stand corrected. I must have missed the point about 'when PRV applies to off peak tickets'.

That would depend on whether their Priv card is marked as valid for discounts on First Class tickets.

Don't forget, Weekend First is available on the Sunday. Highly recommended. Some of the Sunday afternoon trains are hellish.

And 1st Class is often full. I was unable to get a Weekend 1st upgrade on a service to Taunton with 2½ 1st Class carriages, a couple of weeks back.

It'll become harder still when more and more sets are reduced to 1½ carriages of 1st Class.

I've noticed that First Class is becoming busier, but with the usual reluctance of people to either sit beside / across from somebody else, and bags on seats becoming more prevalent, in the usual passive-aggressive manner.

Well, one has to work much harder to maintain "privacy" now that space is at a premium.
