At Huddersfield waiting to get to Dewsbury, I noticed 142009 awaiting departure on the 1231 to Wakefield. I noticed that the DMSL appeared to be sitting noticeably lower than the DMS and decided to have a look at the inside. I have attached images showing the state of the gangway. They aren't great but should give a good idea of the situation.

Now I know that Northern aren't blessed with stacks of spare units, but is putting this out in such a state really a good idea?

I wouldn't say it was uncommon. Was it sitting either side of a poor rail joint?

Simply the tread plate being pushed up. The vehicle was most likely sat on a rail joint and it will drop back once the train moves. Blackpool North is another place you can see this happen.

Even if it fixes itself when the train moves, its still a trip hazard while its like that, and stopped at a station is the most likely time for people to use the gangway. Due to the pacer 3 doors per car design, the gangway is more likely to be used than on any other stock.

It certainly does not look too clever and could easily trip up someone not paying attention to where they are going ... but what is a DMSL and a DMS?

I had overheard some of the disembarking passengers comment on it as they left, so I suspect it wasn't just caused by a rail joint, and had in fact been like that the whole journey. I don't wish to start yet another North vs South argument, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't see something like that on the Marshlink or even the Greenford branch!

You wouldn't see it on the Marshlink because there'd be too many people already standing on it... ;)

Yes, I do know that gangways on 171s are constructed differently.

There's pacers in use in the south by FGW.

I don't see any problem, I can't see the cess....

Nor do I. These are 45t chassis with say 20t of structure and runing gear i.e 25t remain for passengers. Now whilst in the north some are not slim, I challenge anyone to fit 25t of humans into one Pacer car. If you can then we do have a serious problem.

142009 was in use with FGW along with others but was returned to Northern last year or maybe early this year. But FGW now only use the 143´s.

Also there might be a slight difference between FGW and the likes of SE or Southern

Maybe not there but a few weeks back there was a badly ripped and curled carpet on a train I was getting over to Sheerness that I tripped up on. No different really to what is in the picture and Im sure it happens countrywide.

Unless FGW did a short term loan of a 142, the last of the 12 x 142s that FGW sub-leased from Northern returned in time for the December 2011 timetable change. The first 5 returned back in time for the December 2008 timetable change.

And in the south by ATW and Northern when they venture to Lincoln and Scunthorpe

Oi - I grew up between Lincoln and Scunthorpe - and I am most definitely not a Southerner!!!!

Re not cleaning up to the edges - normal for Northern, unacceptable, but no doubt it only happens because it's a 'no growth franchise'............

(Which reminds me of one of the big changes when NSE took over London services in the 80s - they actually cleaned the whole window!)

image.jpgSaltburn station has a terrible dip in the track! It has got worse since this photo was taken. Notice the difference in height between the overhead live wire signs!

You do get that occasionally on the 143's down here, and the TM can usually be heard swearing under their breath about that, the rain pouring through the ceiling, the electrics playing up and the short formedness of the service.

Without it kicking off....

"The North" is Northumberland, Co Durham, Cumberland, Westmorland, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire.

Just because Arriva Trains Wales operates to Birmingham doesn't make it to be in Wales ;)

The "North" is anywhere North of Woking! ;)

When I go and visit the tribe then its anywhere North of Plympton!

Its all a question of perspective.
Funniest thing was at Aldershot FC and all the Torquay supporters were going on about the Northerners (meaning Aldershot supporters).
