Swiss train derailed in landslide

A train has derailed at the top of a gulley after running into a landslide near the Swiss ski resort of St Moritz.

Eleven people are reported to have been injured and taken to nearby hospitals by helicopter, but there appear to have been no fatalities.

The accident left one carriage hanging over the edge of the ravine, while another plunged down before before lodging behind a tree.

The landslide happened after heavy rain in eastern Switzerland overnight.

Early reports coming in that a Swiss train has been derailed by a land slip.

It's an RhB train on the Abula route according to their Twitter

In Tiefencastel are due to travel some RhB cars derailed, no information about casualties. Rescue organizations locally. Follow information.

Train involved apparently a St Moritz to Chur, near Tiefencastel; landslide seems to have hit as the train was passing, missing the loco but sending the first coach down the slope, where trees (used as avalanche protection in the alps!) caught it . BBC has part of the story.

Incident has happened on the extremely vertiginous cliff hanging section between Thusis and Tiefencastel.

Train is on of the hourly expresses on the Chur - St Moritz line

Guess who's heading to the area tomorrow...

Two coaches off as far as I can see. Loco 'Glacier on Tour' Ge4/4III 651. One coach has fallen further than the other but has been stopped by trees (luckily). Last I heard 5 seriously injured 6 less seriously injured.

RhB web site also says that Spinas - Bever is closed - another landslip?

I think the line was open within 3 days of the incident - but that's Swiss efficiency for you. If it had been the UK, the TOC would still be running replacement buses while they tried to work out what to do.

I'm very pleased the line has re-opened, as I plan to photograph the stretch between Tiefencastel and Solis Viaduct this weekend.

After two years of photographing the RhB, the line between Chur and Filisur is the only part I haven't yet photographed, despite having travelled over that stretch of line countless times (and often making Filisur my base for photography weekends).

However, the forecast isn't fantastic for that area this weekend - about 50% cloud cover and the occasional shower - so I might change my plans and head over the Albula pass into the Engadine, where the forecast is for sunshine.

Unfortunately, one of the passengers injured in the derailment, an 85-year-old Swiss man, died of his injuries on Friday morning.

I think the line was open within 3 days of the incident - but that's Swiss efficiency for you. If it had been the UK, the TOC would still be running replacement buses while they tried to work out what to do.

Or the TOC would be banging on everyones doors wanting to know when the line is going to be opened because they want to run trains but are prevented from doing so because RAIB, NR etc are faffing around with investigations instead of getting on with the repairs.

But hey dont let the facts get in the way of a dig at the TOCs will you! :roll:
