Is there a limit to alcoholic drinks in first class - any tips or advice welcome !

Yes. The limit is usually none, however some operators do provide complementary alcoholic drinks on weekday afternoons.
If you're travelling with East Coast, see recent pages in the East Coast First Class service thread.
If you're travelling with one of the other operators who provide this (e.g. Virgin Trains), then it's much the same as East Coast - one drink per trolley round, and the number of occasions the trolley will visit will vary depending on various factors.

Really? Didn't know they normally withheld alcoholic drinks. Whenever I've travelled on 1st advances with TPE I've had no problem whatsoever getting a couple of drinks inbetween Liverpool and Manc.
Most operators don't provide complimentary alcoholic drinks. I can't find any information on the TPE website, but I'll take your word for it that they're one of the exceptions. Seeing a trolley on TPE is something of a rarity though (at least at the times I travel)

That is unless you travel on the Hull runs, where if lucky you get two of everything per round as I found out the other day.

Nope - they'll do the same number of trolley runs whatever and you'll get less beer.

We had a trolley run between York and Newcastle where a drink apiece was allowed then another run Newcastle to Edinburgh where 2 more were served. On the return same from Edinburgh to Newcastle then 2 each Newcastle to York

The other week on a run up to Crewe (on a Thursday) there were two obscure non descript bottled lagers available. Both were like gnat's pee though and I ended up trekking about 9 carriages to the shop to buy a bottle of the reasonable Virgin Tilting Ale.
I've not done Virgin first class for a while, but when I did a couple of years back I found it odd that they served Cusquena lager - shipped from Peru. Good local sourcing

I'll be going VT 1st class tomorrow, Birmingham up to Wigan. Half one in the afternoon isn't too early for a drink is it?

Yes I can vaguely recall one was an obscure South American brew (not the Peruvian one you mention though).
The Virgin Tilting Ale from the 'shop' is brewed by Redwillow of Macclesfield. Quite reasonable @£3.50, You gets what you pays for as they say.

It's not... but bear in mind you'll have to pay for the inebriation as there's no free alcohol in 1st at weekends :P
(That said, I always just go and buy a bottle of Tilting Ale anyway - far better than anything served in 1st even on a weekday!)
