There is a vacancy for a trainee senior conductor working out of Birmingham New Street being advertised by London Midland.

Senior conductor is the only one as far as I know, though there are some ex-centro (or whatever it was called before it became LM) Guards in the Birmingham area that have slightly different T&C's but I believe all are "Commercial Guards"!

Ex-Centro? I guess you mean Central Trains... And by Birmingham area, you mean all Guards at LM depots north and west of Northampton.

Senior Conductor is the only Guard grade in London Midland. The 'Senior' title is strongly defended by some of the more senior, ex BR Senior Conductors, as back in the day the title actually meant something over 'Guard' and 'Conductor'.

I'm not sure when the start dates are for these New Street positions. The place is only halfway through getting around 20 new Guards that got turfed out of Barrier, RPI and Management/Office jobs recently. By the time they're all working trains the depot should be over compliment.

Oh and add 3% on to the advertised salary for what it'll likely be when these jobs start.

It all goes back to the Central Trains Conductor Restructuring Initiative of 1997 where all conductors CT inherited from Regional Railways were regraded as senior conductors under the old BR grading system and given the appropriate payrise, with conductor being abolished as a grade within the company.

Senior conductors basically were akin to what are now train managers on Intercity services and conductors generally worked local services so it was a better rate of pay. As far as I'm aware the only company that calls it's Intercity guards senior conductors now is Anglia.
