Yes, but that just shows what boosting service intensities can do.
That is not an example of Light rail triumphing over the heavy rail dinosaur.
For a case in point just look at the Overground network - especially GOBLIN.
There is no way the current service intensity could be run by conventional stock as a simple shuttle. The tram also provides better penetration of Croydon town centre and cross town links. Trams can easily be 50m long.
