Stone in Staffordshire is a smashing spot, and the station building is lovely albeit not in use for Station users !

Passengers can use the platforms on the stafford route, but not on the main line to London (the virgin trains don't stop)

This seems a shame but probably justified in terms of patronage - but is there anywhere else like this >?

I was going to suggest Carnforth but the main line platforms were removed decades ago.

But you do need to use part of the old main line platform (via the subway) to get out of the station into the car park!

-- edit --

the authoritative source of all knowledge in the universe that is Wikipedia says:

The West Coast Main Line platforms were closed in May 1970, following the withdrawal of local stopping passenger services between Lancaster and Carlisle two years earlier. The platform walls facing the fast lines were demolished, cut back and fenced off a few years later prior to the commissioning of 25Kv overhead electrification in 1974. This made Carnforth a branch line station, even though it is situated on the main line, as WCML trains cannot now call. In 2011, Network Rail rejected suggestions to reopen the mainline platforms, stating that there would be too few passengers to justify slowing down mainline trains.[1] Only the former platforms 4 & 5 (now renumbered 1 & 2) remain in use, as the old 'Midland bay' that once handled trains on the Joint line to Skipton & Leeds is also disused and no longer rail-connected.

There are no platforms on the main line route. The down has still got some structure in place but not a workable platform and the up has nothing at all

Lostock and Raventhorpe are also similar, the lines to Wigan and Wakefield respectively having no platforms.

You can only access Exeter Central and beyond to/from Platforms 1& 3 at Exeter St.Davids.

I think the OP was highlighting the situation where there are still platforms on the route but they can't be used to catch a train by passengers because no trains stop on that route at all, that certainly isn't the situation at Exeter.

The Norton Bridge route is actually the main line (North Staffs ML) whereas the Colwich line is the 'Colwich Branch'...

Other stations which spring to mind are Brixton (platforms on the Catford Loop side removed) and Loughborough Junction. The platforms look like they still exist, but overgrown and abandoned

Also Barassie, platforms on the Glasgow South Western Line side removed

What about Salford Central where Eccles line services have to pass through? However I do know that the tracks and platforms are due to be re-configured as part of the Ordsall Chord development.

How about Wigan North Western, trains from the Preston direction can only use Platform 1 if they are being diverted via Hindley to Bolton/Manchester.

It would make sense for them to open the Up platform on the Colwich branch to allow the 17:24 ex Euston to call at Stone, given the poor connections to Stone as this service passes through but does not call.

When was the last time a passenger train used the platform on the New Street avoiding line at Stechford?

Newton in Lanarkshire comes to mind. It used to have 2 platforms on the fast lines to & from Glasgow. These platforms were removed in the early 1960s, around the same time the Cathcart Circle was electrified. I doubt they were ever used that much when they were still in situ.

Didn't there used to be a Walsall to Airport or opposite avoiding New Street booked in there until a few years ago?

Pretty sure that was via New St, I suspect the Proof House job was probably the last time in anger but that was going to be STP and not LTP.

But don't the London Midland services to Euston call there?

The daddy of them all must be Loughborough Junction, nowhere near Leicester but in Lambeth, South London. Still called a junction even if it's nearly a century since it was!

I don't think either platform on the Colwich branch has been in place for many years.

Isn't the up platform completely absent and the down one cut back a fair bit?

I regularly travelled this route in the sixties and seventies and I'm pretty sure the platforms were absent then.

BTW, wouldn't the 17:24 ex Euston want the down platform?
