Portsmouth to Ryde ticket

Good evening

Looking to travel from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde PH next Saturday as a foot passenger with my family (wife and 2 kids, 7 and 2). I'll be in the Portsmouth area, the ferry isn't cheap so looking at any sorts of discount - and I found this: http://www.isleofwightguru.co.uk/discount-isle-of-wight-ferry-travel.html (number 5).

I am sure I've heard of this before. Anyway I went to a SWT ticket office today and the clerk point blank refused to sell me the ticket ('would have to go to the ferry company'). He (at my suggestion) said he would sell me a portsmouth and southsea to ryde ticket, which appears to reduce the discount available (I have a gold card).

Is the information in the article correct please?

Looked at Portsmouth Harbour - Ryde Esplande on TPX website and it allowed railcard discounts.

I had this issue when I asked at Portsmouth Harbour for such a ticket. I think it's simply because SWT can't rob Wightlink from under their nose. I bought a Portsmouth & Southsea - Ryde ticket at Wigan to save the hassle of not getting the correct ticket at Portsmouth. My railcard discount was also accepted too.

Many thanks for replies so far. To note I wasn't at a Portsmouth station today-indeed many miles away. Also it didn't show on national rail search,which concerned me.

From your replies,this is valid-I should not have to use TPE etc when every day I can buy face to face surely...

I tried traintimes.org.uk with the route.

It seems only fares are quoted in the Ryde-Portsmouth dirn not vv.

I beleive they're only supposed to be used for rail/sea journeys, so unless you've got another ticket to get you to Harbour then a discounted Harbour to Ryde ticket on it's own is probably not valid.

If you do want to buy one they are available online, and last time I had time to waste at Lymington Pier I noticed the TVM was quite happy to sell a Pier-Yarmouth ticket, though this was a couple of years back.

Discounted tickets are perfectly valid. Just buy online, pick up from the tvm at Portsmouth Harbour and show at the ferry terminal. I travel regularly on this route and it works no problem with a railcard. Only thing is you have to buy to ryde esplanade as there are no Portsmouth harbour to pier head fares in that direction.

And that's probably the answer to the OP's problem: include a rail journey, however short.

So, Portsmouth & SS to Ryde Pier Head or Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Esplanade, whichever is cheaper.

Ticket includes the bus transfer from Portsmouth and Ssea to Southsea Hoverport.
The hovercraft is a bit more fun than the fast cat in my opinion. I believe its the only rail ticket with an inclusive flight.
My nieces love it.

The combined rail and hovercraft ticket allows free travel on the connecting Hoverbus service. Please alight at Portsmouth & Southsea railway station to connect with the Hoverbus service to take you directly to Southsea Hoverport.

IMPORTANT : Please state 'Ryde Hoverport' when purchasing your tickets to ensure you are traveling via Hovertravel. If your ticket states 'Ryde Esplanade', or any other Island destination, then your ticket will not be vaild to use on Hovertravel services.

Hoverbus information:

Alight at Portsmouth & Southsea Railway Station and follow the signs to the Hoverbus, bus stop C. You will cross the road by the zebra crossing leading you to the Hoverbus stop. I've never used the hovercraft...in all the times i've travelled to/from the island. This thread has helped me.

Nat rail wrong as ever.I argued with the stagecoach driver on the hoverbus and he insisted you do pay.No Stagecoach day tickets are valid either and as it arrives right before the hovercraft leaves if there is a queue you miss it.That said I do love it!!
