If you say they're not, you must be travelling on the wrong service. When I used to catch (for the last 6 months) the 16.44, 17.14 or 17.44 from Temple Meads to Wells there was no room left to stand. It would usually empty out by the time it got to Maes Knoll. As far as I can remember, after travelling into and out of Bristol for the last 4 years on 376, all buses at peak from Temple Meads have no room left and only since the changes in Feb has the 376 seen people standing at Knowle to Bristol in the morning peak times (if there isn't a 379 just before). I do agree with you about the overall capacity - there isn't much when you look at it. If the 379 was improved (as mentioned before), along with the 2, it would distribute the demand more and mean people aren't standing on the 376 at all. If it was limited stop between Bristol and Happy Landings, it would solve that problem overall.

I thought I read in the GBBN that there was some plan to have a P&R along the A37. Must be wrong.

I'm impressed. Every day you catch 3 different departures. I've semi regularly caught the 0700/0729 ex Wells departures from Farrington.

As I say, not standing, not crush loaded at Wells Road. Seen it, experienced it. Full buses leaving can be sorted by a) not setting down til after HL and b) running to time!

There is the proposal to undertake a feasibility study for Whitchurch P&R. That's all.

I think the best option for First is to sort out the 376/379 timetable. The 2 timetable also needs to be better. The 376 and 379 should be limited stop from Happy Landings-Bristol. The 379 should be 15 mins between each of the 376. An extra bus should be added to 376, with timings improved. Maybe interwork the 376, like it used to be, with something like the 375 (now X75) - this should improve the punctuality.

Deckers are a stupid idea on 376.

Wrong. Not sure whether the depot has had Deckers, but the services definitely have - the 376 used to have Deckers according to my dad (quite a while ago) and they could be used. However, demand is not good enough. I also saw a lorry going along the road past the Wells depot - hitting every last tree - so no deckers would be no good in Wells.

Not since the 1960s when the depot relocated. Hence why I phrased it as I did!! Current location did not refer to dried fruit!!!!!

WS depot didn't even have Mk1 Nationals because of the roof pod.

I did say the 16.44, 17.14 or the 17.44.

And I agree with the a) and b). I'm still not going to give in about the amount of people using the buses though. One day in September, catch the 376 at 16.44 or 17.14 from Temple Meads (they're the busiest) and count the number of people standing on there - if there's a 2 or 51 just before, it won't work (kind of hard to guess I suppose!). You could also catch the 376 at 7.00 from Wells - this one is usually the busiest out of all morning peak journeys - that one and the next are perfect examples of where the 379 is going wrong (i.e. the 379 is 5 mins before one 376 and 25 mins after another - bit stupid at peak!).

That was twenty years before my time, nonetheless I have certainly never seen a decker based in Wells. There simply isn't the need.

Where was the depot in the 1960s?

Hi, Yes Wells were fortunate to have the smashing Bristol RE's allocated for many years instead of any Nationals though sometimes one would appear on a 173 from Bath Depot on a Sunday when the duty's were shared on that route for that one day of the week.
Only service deckers I've seen and ridden on in Wells was back in 2007 when the 29 from Taunton sometimes had a Eastern Coachworks Oly on it.
This soon altered when the 29 route was changed to run via Windmill Hill in Glastonbury to replace the 669 running that way to Shepton.
Good old days and only 7 or so years ago.

I am extremely surprised that the 15 and 20 are being withdrawn, with NO replacements.

The 15 KIND OF has a replacement in the form of First's new 72 service.

It's the shed behind the Darts, how would deckers fit in there for maintainace?http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5080/7058499093_0baeb2b1c8_o.jpg!

To be fair I've never even seen Wells depot.

Swifty is spot on. The solution is not to allocate deckers; a hilarious idea. The 379 runs along there with next to nothing on it so solution is to retime and also make them set down only after HL.

I wouldn't say it was 'hilarious' as such; it would make perfect sense seeing how busy they are. Try catching one of the services that THarris123 quoted. Then you will realise how busy they are!

However as they can't fit into Wells depot that idea has gone straight out of the window.

Something needs to be done as it's not right that people are literally squashed onto buses like a tin of sardines. Whether or not altering the timetable will make a difference I do not know.

I sometimes get the impression that you wouldn't even care if services like the 48 and the 75 were all operated by tiny Enviro 200s or something, or that all of Bristol's deckers were axed!

If anyone is able to answer I would be interested to find out, prior to February when the 376 terminated at Wells, was there a service operating between Wells and Street in the evenings and on sundays/bank holidays or has an evening/sunday service between these points been a new thing?

You've suggested deckers when they won't fit in the depot? Is that not an elementary issue? Does it not show a lack of knowledge on your part?

Your default option is to say, "bit busy, needs deckers". In fact, you seem to be obsessed. This is despite a number of drawbacks for decker use. They cost more to buy, more to operate, suffer from higher levels of vandalism. Also, ever wondered why they bother to put up handles and the like for standees?

My view is that there are a range of options. In some cases, it's frequency enhancements as per the 70/71. In some, like the 173, you have to have a duplicate into Wells in the morning. With the 376, it's changing the existing capacity by evening out headways and shifting the most local traffic onto the 2 and 50. I do use the 376 AND 379, so I know where passengers get on. Yes they're full by the time that you see them in the centre of town. They'd not be at Happy Landings - go figure?

To answer Martin's question, the 376 traditionally operated from Wells to Street evening and Sunday. In the mid 1990s, it was only four journeys on a Sunday or which two started from Taunton and Bridgwater to Street as Southern National ran them. However, in those days, there were 3 services from Bath to Wells that also ran thru to Glastonbury. When RBC funding came along about 15 years ago, Sunday services across Somerset massively expanded. Some survive like the 21, 22, 376 but others soon went after the funding went,

Until 2011 there were much later services to Glastonbury/Street. Certainly throughout the 00s the last bus for Street left Wells at about 23.15, and returned by about 00.00. There was also a service to Yeovil which left Wells at 21.15, returning by 00.00. There even used to be late night services to Shepton, though that's going back a few years.

Sunday services have varied over the last ten/fifteen years. Now there is just an hourly service Wells to Street on Sundays, but tbh that's all that is needed. A couple of years ago there were probably too many services.

I remember back in 2001, there was (and still is) an hourly service to Bristol. One was operated by Wells, and continued to Yeovil as it did in the week, although was numbered 977. The other was operated by Taunton, on what was probably a five hour round trip. It came in to Wells as service 929, continued to Bristol as 976 (via East Wells), and returned.

i'm not sure how this would work timetable wise but 379 shorts from Bristol - Pensford could work turning at chelwood bridge roundabout and heading back in would bring a 15 min headway to the timetables into Bristol

I remember the evening Shepton services in the early 1990s; think they were an extension of the Weston service 826. At the same time, there was indeed a late run to Yeovil that actually extended out to Junction station and Barwick but SCC pulled funding for both.

The Sunday services were either Avon CC funded (826, 676, 773) from Weston, Bristol and Bath to Wells or commercial (3 x Taunton to Minehead). In 2000ish, RBC funding meant SCC could then fund Sunday services all over the place including Yeovil to Wincanton/Cary/Chard. Some have survived though

How about.....

Send one 376 via Horringtons and Green Ore to create a 20/40 split and then slip the 379 between to create an even 20 min headway from Temple Cloud to town!

And still make them set down only from Happy Landings. I can't see the trade for every 15 mins from Pensford.

If there was a real commercial opportunity, Abus would've seized it.

The 669 only ran that route briefly, the 29 took over after passengers complained about losing their service to Wells. For many years service 163 served Windmill Hill, en route between Wells and Bridgwater. This was replaced by 375, which ran as far as Bristol for a couple of years, but when the 375 was split, it also stopped operating via the hill because it was gettint too difficult to operate with the large buses, so the 669 was re routed using mini buses or darts. Now the 29 does it, which at the time also served the hospital.

I'd like to see the 375 revert to using darts and serve Windmill Hill again, and allow the 29 to run on the main road, but who knows at the moment.

More importantly, looks like First in Plymouth are to lose their e400s and experience a slimming of the operation.

Depends what happens with WB. The current level of service is unsustainable. If they pull out or turn turtle, then expect a fair chunk of rationalisation!

Indeed, there are currently seven buses every hour between Wells and Street (five First, two WB) and EIGHT every second hour when the 375 runs! That is far too much and it will certainly be interesting to seeif that continues, particuarly with WB. And oddly enough not a single one of those serves the West Mendip Hospital in Glastonbury. (Although the 29 used to, so I suppose it wasn't very well used despite initial calls for a bus stop).

I like that idea, but think it could be too much frequency for the demand. It will definitely work for peak hours, but off peak one bus p/hour would go in and out empty.

Wellington Hill West is going from 5bph to 0

I did a full journey(well allmost, boarding at Pen Park Road top rather than the end of Charlton Road) on the 20 this afternoon. I was on the 1342 Southmead-Centre service. One person on there allready, and two boarding at the same stop as me. Other people boarded along the route in places such as Greystoke Avenue, Westbury High Street, Waters Lane, Eastfield Road, Wellington Hill West, Kellaway Avenue, Bishop Road, Kings Drive, Cheltenham Road, though no one boarded after that. Probably about 20 people boarded during this journey. At Arley Hill we passed the 1400 Centre-Southmead service which was hauled(!!) by a nice Marshall Dart. So this would have also later worked the 1530 Centre-Southmead service. Quite a nice journey down, and a pleasant change from getting a 75, 76, or 309 down Gloucester Road!! I was planning on getting a 20 back again, but in the end I couldn't be bothered as I had done my little bit of shopping by just after 1500 and would have just missed that service, and couldn't be bothered waiting about for the 1530 service. I will though do one more Northbound journey on the 20 within the next few weeks before the service is sadly axed.

I got on a 73 on the way back. And two women were asking the driver if the bus went to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway. To which he said yes and they boarded. They would have been in for quite a looooong round the houses journey to get there! They would have been better off getting a 75 instead, or a 309 or X7 from the bus station!

This idea is much better - the frequency along the route between Temple Cloud and Bristol should be every 20 mins. Sounds like a really good idea that - and it makes the Horringtons have a service to Bristol again (benefiting those two people!!). The only possible problem that I can see - will the 173 and 376 clash going into Wells just before the Cathedral (that really horrible road with cars parked everywhere (not sure what it's called)). And what about Chewton Mendip & Farrington Gurney - they would end up having to wait 20 mins or 40 mins.

I could also possibly see some clashes in some of the more narrow parts of the A37 - i.e. the hill through Temple Cloud & Chewton Mendip. Other than this, it sounds like a great idea and should be suggested to First.

You would have the 20/40 split for Chewton and Farrington but hey, the 376 was only hourly 15 years ago! And yes, you'd have to retime the 173 potentially but really, that's not the biggest issue. As for clashes with other buses, you meet so many trucks on the A37, you really can't worry.

Webberbus are just in the way - give it a year and 37/38 will be gone!

My idea has always been to have a service between Wells and Street every 10/15 mins. Have something like this:-
376 .00 (from Wells)
375 .15
29 .30
377 .45

Scrap the X75 (apart from peak) and do away with 37 & 38.

The above is probably the best suggestion, but I personally prefer this:-
377 .00
376 .10
375 .20
29 .30
376 .40
X75 .50

But as I'm sure many of you will say - "there's not enough demand for a service between Wells and Street every 10 mins" and "there's not enough demand for a Wells to Bridgwater service every 30 mins".

Another idea would be to actually work with Webberbus:-
376 .00
375 .10
37/38 .20
29 .30
37 .40
377 .50

This would also mean the 54 shorts could stop (if BoS all of a sudden experience a drop in staff).

The likelyhood of all this is, that Wells depot aren't going to reduce the Wells to Street services any time soon, unless they get back the 126 and/or 379 and/or have a new service. This is because of the staffing in Wells - they are currently 2 over (at least) what is required for the depot (as two have been moved into Bath). If I was going to make a guess, I would expect to see Wells get back the 379 and interwork it with 376 and 173, then Bath would possibly start doing some of Bristol's services (possibly 42 or 17?). But you never know - it's highly unlikely!

I've probably gone off into the realms of fantasy on this!

You have to remember that changing the 173 will impact on 379, 184 and 178, which could have an impact on other services. But I think these are just minor issues - something that First can work around.

I really wish they would bring back some of those later services in the evenings. I know they wouldn't have any demand, but if they were two hourly (at least), they would help any drunks get home on a Friday/Saturday night. I personally think there should be 2 later X75/375s, 377 should run until 20.00/21.00 and 161 should have a Shepton - Wells service every 2 hours into the evening.

The Sundays are awful in Wells now. Admittedly they are only running the services that take any demand - 376 and 173, but the way in which the 376 is run is appalling. If you look at the timetable, there is a half hour gap between 376s going into Bristol at about 10.00ish and going out of Bristol at about 18.00ish (pointless due to the demand), along with a 50 minute wait in Bristol for the drivers. Bring back the 377 on a Sunday and have it running only to Somerton. That would probably sort out the problem.

Sorry, I meant that they could retime the 173 but that wasnt the most pressing issue!

If WB were to be off the scene, you might see a 15 min frequency from Wells to Street with 2 x 376, a 375 and 377. Lose the X75, and curtail the 29 to Glastonbury as it traditionally was until about 1995.

Don't see the 379 heading back to WS at all. However, it wouldn't be difficult to increase the 173 to half hourly by joining the 179 & 184 together, and adding an extra vehicle onto the 184s that work Bath to Norton. Whether the trade is there south of Chilcompton, I don't know?

I think if the 376 needs to be retimetabled, it's probably best it only runs between Wells and Street every hour - it'll give it a break after coming out of Bristol and maybe improve punctuality.

I agree with the rest though - have a 15 min frequency and lose the X75. Have the 29 terminating at West Mendip hospital.

You've suggested deckers when they won't fit in the depot? Is that not an elementary issue? Does it not show a lack of knowledge on your part?

To which I said I didn't know about the size of Wells depot.

Your default option is to say, "bit busy, needs deckers". In fact, you seem to be obsessed.

No. The only thing I'm 'obsessed' about is when people are rammed onto single deckers because deckers aren't available.

Well something needs to be done as at the moment it is abnormal.

Many thanks to those who responded to my earlier post about the Wells service. I didn't realise there were later services between Wells and Street as far back as 2011. I'm guessing they were withdrawn due to the need to make savings, as the 173 and 376 nearly were on sundays and bank holidays?

I appreciate this is off topic but I travelled back from Bristol to Yate on the X46this evening(the 1716 departure from Bristol Bus Station) and was rather shocked at the low loadings. I expected this journey to be really busy but there were only about 5 of us on.

If the X27 does actually get withdrawn is it likely that the passenger numbers will go up on the X46 at the weekends? I sometimes travel into Bristol on the X27 on saturday mornings and the loadings are never very high.

I also do wonder how long First will run deckers on the X46 for. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually revert to single deck operation on that route.

Yes but not knowing that you can't use deckers at that depot is rather fundamental! I use/have used those services whilst you are looking at them running into the centre. That they're full isn't in dispute. It's the WHY that must define the solution! Merely suggesting deckers as a default solution isn't the answer, most pointedly in this instance!

Somerset CC removed funding hence, as elsewhere, the services peter out early. They removed all funding and First did keep many running commercially though on a use it or lose it basis. The evening services have declined whilst the 377 also got pulled eventually.

As for the X46, depending how much trade transfers from the X27. First must be pleased.

A few have suggested dropping the X75 from the timetable. At the moment it is the more frequent service, running every hour, whilst the 375 is reduced to every two and not at all on Saturdays. However it exists because of WB route 37, and if that were to go, would that mean the end of the X75 as well? There is after all only really demand for one service to Bridgwater an hour, the 375 surely being the most profitible.

Not sure I agree about having the 29 terminate at Glastonbury. Of the three towns (Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil), Taunton is surely the most popular detination for people from Wells? Don't think they'd want to lose that. I could be wrong though.
