Some of Britain’s most beautiful landscapes could be fracked for oil and gas after the Government today invited bids from energy companies for licences that would allow them start work wherever they think resources can be found.

I hope I'm not the only one thinking, how is fracking on or next to a site which is internationally recognised as historically important because of its heritage in the public interest?

I don't understand where this sudden fetish for fracking has come from. The USA has been doing it for a while now and there are most definitely environmental problems associated with it. If we're hellbent on consuming large amounts of power then at least be sensible about it and build a modern design of nuclear reactor.

Quite, when you've got places in the US where they only drink bottled water due to the waste fracking water leaking into groundwater flows surely that is a bad sign!

Cuadrilla have vowed that fracking will decrase the consumers energy bill , people would rather pay lower gas bills for a few years then protect world heritage sites

Would this lower bill also make allowances for the clean up cost afterwards or is it understood that those living around the extraction sites will pay dearly for many years after?

Fools rush in where wise men fear to tread, we will not realise what we have until it's been destroyed I fear.

If you believe that then your face will be in the dictionary under gullible. They'll find some reason to hike the prices

The detritus from coal mining around my area has been absorbed into the landscape in only a few years.

There isn't one sole source, I heard it in a video on YouTube listing positives and negatives about fracking and explaining what it is. When you google fracking USA groundwater pollution you get various different results relating to the query from sources like the guardian

Here we go point two :

The town of Dimock, Pennsylvania began to have water bottles delivered to them by Cabot Oil & Gas after the company’s fracking contaminated the entire town’s water supply in 2009. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (D.E.P.) began to investigate after people felt dizzy whenever they showered, when their “water started turning brown and making them sick, one woman’s water well spontaneously combusted, and horses and pets mysteriously began to lose their hair.”

Ah.
Just internet chat.
I would really like an independent academic investigation. Although then you have to check who has funded the research.
Who knows where the truth is.

Oh I dont believe it ,I know the savings in sourcing gas domestically(if indeed there are any ) will be absorbed by shareholders and wont be passed onto the customer . Im just stating why the public are being short sighted in placing some percieved possibility of reduced energy bills ahead of protecting world heritage sites

Do you know if any of those shareholders are linked to the Tory party? I'm only asking because with many things like this where shareholders will make lots of money there seems to be a 'friend' benefiting from it, like George Osbourne's best man making £36m from the Royal Mail privatisation (source: http://politicalscrapbook.net/2014/04/osborne-best-mans-hedge-fund-made-36m-profit-on-royal-mail/ )

Ah yes Tracking, the next big con.
1. Tracking has boomed in the US with a lot of wells being initially productive. This has crashed their gas price
2. Production tails off rapidly meaning the Americans are already having to exponentially increase the number of wells drilled to maintain production
3. The estimates of how much gas is crackable have been vastly wrong - for example in California they dropped the production estimate by 90%

So why are the government so excited about it in the UK?
1. Large donations from fracking companies to the Tory party
2. The promise of low gas prices sounds politically attractive despite Euro gas prices being set by the market (supply/demand but mainly bank speculation) and thus tracking by their own quiet admission won't affect the price
3. It hides the vast hole in energy policy since privatisation which saw the farm bet on gas, north sea reserves burned off in 20 years leaving the private owners fat on profit and us heavily reliant on Russian gas.

The environment? Not a factor in their consideration when there Are vast profits to be made. Except that there aren't, with the now ex Boss of Shell on record stating that their move into US tracking was one of the worst investment bets in their history

This should give you some idea of the links between the government and frackers. <(

Good point although it does seem that for every privatisation there is a Tory party friend / member of family making some ££££££ out of it!

This should give you some idea of the links between the government and frackers. <(
Thank you I shall read that now!

The main problem in the states is they are not doing it properly and cutting corners to increase productivity. If done correctly fracking can be safe, it remains to be seen if companies in the UK will do so or try and emulate our American cousins. I do however object to digging up heritage sites or other areas outstanding beauty, but that's no different to building housing estates on belts or another god awful shopping complex.

The last time I wrote on this it was met with a storm of protest by defenders of the process. They based their support for it on the many existing wells which, with a few exceptions, are only vertical bores. They have also often been fracked but only around the base.

There are those who say that those who have been protesting are wasting their time as the fracking will go ahead anyway. What they have done, however, is to bring into public consciousness. Any cowboy operators (which means all of them if they feel they can get away with it) will know they are under scrutiny.

This is mere speculative prediction with no factual basis

I reckon it will start off being done as safely as possible with loads of regulation to ensure safety but before long it will degenerate into the crazy George bush deregulated circus that it has become in the states and then it will be too late .

I have no problem with fracking per se , I do think we need to be ever so cautious of doing it to world heritage sites and other areas of outstanding natural beauty . I think we also need to be careful of polluting the water supply . But as long as the companies licensed for fracking are actually held accountable for cleaning up afterwards I see no issue (which we all know is a big ask )
