Northern Staff Commuting on TPE

Hello everyone,

This is my first thread on this forum and although I have used the search function quite a few times I am still unsure so thought I would ask the question.

I will be starting my Conductor training with Northern on the 4th of August, I live about 10 miles away from Sheffield train station but my training is going to be in Leeds for 3 months.

I know I will be getting a Pass for free travel with my TOC but is probably easier for me as I am training 9am-5pm to drive to either Barnsley or Huddersfield station and get the train to Leeds everyday as distance wise there's not much in all 3 stations.

Looking at the timings for departing from both Hudds and Barnsley to Leeds most of the services I will be needing to use are with TPE, I will miss the Northern service by a few minutes on my commute home but there are plenty of TPE services.

I read about a Residential pass to allow me to commute on TPE, How would I go about getting one of these?

I also read that sometimes TPE Gaurds allow Northern staff to commute without charge?

All trains at Barnsley are Northern, and Sheffield - Leeds fasts are XC.

Thank you, What about Hudds though? Not many Hudds-Leeds trains are Northern and are TPE?

Just ask the guard on the TP train if you can hop on, just don't get on ask in a polite friendly manner.

If you mention to the instructor that your train is just about the same time as the day of training ends, they might be flexible enough to 'finish early', so that you can get it.

By all means ask the guard on the TPE service if you can use your pass on their train before boarding, most seem to be okay if you are polite about it, but don't rely on it unless you are prepared to pay the fare when they do say no.

Ask about the residential pass when you get there, I'm sure the training staff can point you in the right direction.

To be fair there is no set finish time depending on the days topic some days you may be done by 2 others 4.
