Hi.
I am reading uncomfirmed reports on Drehscheibe Online that the IC Twindex or Dosto trains (146 + Double Deckers) will not enter IC services but will go to DB Regio instead.
Although I have never been a fan of that idea one wonders of DB's incoherant policy.
Will non-airconditioned IC stock remains for years and years? Has the bus-liberalisation taken such a big slice of the transport cake?

Non-airconditioned stock (Bim(d)z(f)) is supposed to be slowly being phased out, at least in favour of the ICx fleet. These coaches are mostly used for additional peak-relief services on Fridays and Sundays. First class Intercity rolling stock in Germany is always air conditioned.

The liberalisation of intercity coach travel in Germany has actually created more demand. Many of those who are now travelling by coach have formerly used regional rail day tickets but intercity rail travel has always been rather pricey. In fact the availability of Advance tickets on certain routes (ex. Berlin-Ruhrgebiet: IC Berlin-Minden (Westf) + NRW-RE6 up to Düsseldorf) has noticeably increased during the last months.

Double deck ICx stock always seemed a bit stupid to me, especially since DB announced they would have a trolley rather than a BordBistro or BordRestaurant

Double Deckers are suppose to return to the Aachen to Siegen line as the Talent 2 obviously lack the capacity needed.

As to air-con on IC trains. The Cologne to Norddeich / Emden trains still have a lot of non-air-con coaches.

The initial post on Drehscheibe says it's due to inadequate equipment or specification - ie dbfernverkehr doesn't like them. I find this surprising...
Regio (or the laender) prefers emus to loco hauled, on cost grounds rather than single deckers as such.

I understand Bombardier are working on a EMU version of the DOSTO - SBB are taking a batch for Intercity work

Stadler already got Double Deck EMU's called KISS. The CFL version can be admired in Trier right now.

One wonder why DB Fernverkehr did not buy second hand IC/EC coaches at the time. There were plenty on offer. A contract with SBB was even cancelled due to the unfareable exchange rate.
