A friend is going to be making a journey this Friday that involves a cross-London interchange between Liverpool street and Euston, is he allowed to stretch the time taken between the two stations and take a later train from Euston than the journey planner suggests?

For example, I've had a look at a similar journey to which he'll be making, Ipswich to Cheddington (dep 4.09, arrive London 5.20, leave Euston 6.05), the cheapest single fare is set by ABELLIO GREATER ANGLIA (http://www.brfares.com/#!faredetail?orig=IPS&dest=CED&rte=420&ldn=1&tkt=OS3). Is the London Midland train from Euston deemed to be a connecting train? If so,can he get an later departure of say 8.25pm?

With Thanks in Advance

Alastair

The passenger must take the booked service if a reservation coupon is issued for it. For any leg not issued with a reservation coupon, you may take any appropriate connecting service.

Which trains does your friend have reservation coupons for?

You linked to the rules, which state that a break of journey is not permitted (the NRCoC states what constitutes a break of journey), and that "travel is allowed on appropriate connecting trains". In practice, the reservation coupon isn't likely to be inspected by LM, but they could do so.

If your friend catches trains for which he can justifiably say are "reasonable", e.g. if he can get NRE to produce an itinerary (by specifying extra interchange time) and providing your friend doesn't do anything that constitutes a break of journey (e.g. going for a drink or meal at a pub within the stations isn't a break of journey, while going to a random pub in London would be) then there's a good case to say it's valid.

And if not, then arguably it wouldn't be!

(I wish I had a pound for every time this question has cropped up! ;))

Many thanks for the quick responses, to my knowledge he hasn't booked anything yet and from what I can gather is going to meet a friend who lives near Liverpool Street for a swift ale or two (although his plans may change). I'll let him know that if he leaves the station he would be breaking his journey contrary to the terms and conditions of the advance ticket.

with thanks
