Great news for all you pacer lovers. The 142 now has permanent booked work on this route. So if you fancy a 4 hour ride on one, now is the time to get it. The 142 is booked from Blackpool via the 0519 Preston-Carlisle, from which it's uncoupled at Barrow then its Coast jobs are 1010 Barrow-Carlisle, 1247 Carlisle-Lancaster, & back to Barrow at 1645 for a couple of trips to Millom, before returning to Preston at 2143.

Caught this the other week at the 1111 ex-Baystones, I knew Pacers now worked on the line but I was expecting one! Rather enjoyed it actually, offered some pleasant panoramas of the view up towards Whitehaven and Workington.

Had the pleasure...or is that misfortune to endure a 3 hour journey on an unrefurbished one for a journey from Cark & Cartmel - Carlisle a few years ago. Needless to say i'm not in a hurry to repeat that trip...even if the view along to coast is fantastic.

I guess for the forseeable future. The unit was swapped for a 153 which now works the Preston - Ormskirk route, but the main reason for its addition is to keep the Barrow and Workington crews fresh with the 142.

Breathing a big sig of relief, as I'm planning to visit tomorrow and fortunately taking the 1123 from Lancaster to Carlisle - I'm hoping that will be a 156, but would still settle for a 153 over a 142 for that length of journey.

I can swear I saw a 142 last week in the bay platforms at Lancaster working the evening Millom diagram, didn't know it was permanent though! God help those brave souls on board if it gets windy around Avalanche Alley on the Coast workings!

Not too far away from there is probably the worst stretch of jointed track in the country. From Carnforth to Giggleswick on the Lancaster - Leeds runs. I have never been over it on a 14X but it's pretty bad in a 150, far worse than the Atherton line ever was. It would be horrendous in a pacer

I'm trying to clear my 142s for haulage by combining Salford Central to Manchester Victoria with Edge Hill to Lime Street.

Matt, I know that you are an expert in all things railway station-related and I know the fell areas inland from the coastal area, but Baystones is an area near to Wansfell Pike and one that was never blessed with a railway connection, even though it would be ideal for those who enjoy strenuous hikes.

It's not. They've been working on the Furness and Cumbrian coast lines since introduction to service. A few years ago most booked work for Pacers was withdrawn from the line but recently they've made a come back.

It's good fun on a 144

I can remember on one of my mercifully rare 142 journeys on that line, it had some considerable difficulty getting around the curve at Carnforth. I thought at one stage we were going to have to get out and push !

With regard to the Cumbrian Coast, I did this on a 153 once and it really wasn't adequate in terms of capacity, so (and it pains me to say this) a pacer might well be an improvement in this respect. Really needs to be a 144 rather than a 142 for a journey of that length though.
