For anything on the national network, I only count the one I'm sat in - as the assumption is, for example if it's an 8-car set today, tomorrow it could be a 4-car set by itself.

For LUL stuff it's a bit trickier - where units are permanently coupled to each other in a single set (e.g. the new 2009TS and S7/S8) then I consider the whole train as a pair (e.g. 21009/22009/23009/24009/24010/23010/22010/21010 would be 'set 5'). That said, I wrongly assumed when I started recording that certain other stocks did the same, e.g. the 96TS, so my recordings are based on that. I'm starting to try and correct that now, but it's not easy!

The only 'top and tail' example I ever see in practice on my travels is HSTs - Yes, I will take both as haulage where possible, but all too often I never get to find out what one of them is!

capital12, you make your own rules  It is entirely up to you what you wish to log but I would say with regard to locos that it is considered "fudging" to count it for haulage if the loco is not actually under power which can be quite difficult to ascertain in some cases. This is why I dislike doing double headed stuff if not in multiple or having locos on the rear unless they can be "multied" up through the train like HSTs or the 37s that worked between Leeds and Carlisle a few years ago. This is not always as straightforward as it appears as this method of working is relatively common on the continent and in some cases I have had to make an assumption that an electric loco is working if the pantograph is raised.

Regarding units, though I write down the number of the unit (or coach on the UndergrounD) that I actually travel in, I don't keep a tally of which ones I have had or go out chasing them due to an almost complete lack of interest in such things; I have enough trouble keeping tabs on loco haulage! In some countries (Switzerland especially) they have things like motor luggage vans over which there is some debate over whether it is a unit or a loco:

My rule for such things is simple, if you can't sit in it as a passenger then it is a loco though other people might have their own views on such things.

I have no interest in tallying passenger coaches of loco-hauled stock - I take what's 'hauling' the train. That said, since the vast majority of my travel is multiple units, I will still obviously take those...

I count whatever is powering the train. So locos working in top and tail mode would both be counted, but one dead on the rear wouldn't be. With units I count all the units in the formation but any unit which isn't powering for whatever reason won't be. So EMUs with the pantograph down on one unit or DMUs with all the engines out on one unit aren't counted.

Keith Jarrett: Don't forget Glasgow Queen Street Low Level to Charing Cross, or Central Low Level to Argyle Street or High Street. Both very much a bus stop bash!

Samuelmorris: Cool beans, I'll look forward to any input you'll have on that thread :)

As for my 'rules', I do the same as most others here regarding MUs and top and tail locos/power cars. Dead locos on the back are a no-no, and with LU I'll count each set in the consist. Victoria line stuff, for example, I'll record the driving cars of the sets, so for example 11017+11018.

That'll have to do for the reply, on my phone and need to get off it sharpish!

As 33056 says, you make up your own rules.

For loco-hauled, people normally count all locos that are powered, so ones that are "dead" do not, eg. on a Durham Coast drag, the 67 will count but the 91 will not, since it is unpowered. Top-and-tailed ones count both if both are powered.

Units I personally only count the ones I am in for haulage. If I physically move between units I will count all the ones occupied, but movements can only happen at stations (at least semantically). This is despite in theory on corridored stock you could have moved at intermediate stations even if you don't in reality. No physical occupation, no cop.

For LU I count component halfsets/third sets/quartersets as with units.

For units and LU I also keep a copy of units that have been in the formation that are powered, in line with what many others do.

My rules are only powering things so basically If I get a 91 being dragged by a 67 only the 67 will count.

It is the same with units. If I am on a pair and they are both powering they will both count. Obviously I would aim to get on the nicest of the two.

I have the same policy. What about people's policy on re-numbering or re-engining? I count it as having had it before and not being required though I do record something as being 'new for renumbering' though I wouldn't actually chase it. My reasoning is that most locos will have gained a new power unit/bogies/etc at some point, so it's the frame that counts. However, if the frame has been cut, it ceases to be, so 37372/D5910 will have to be done again. It makes sense to me, and that's who matters!

My policy is that if it's been renumbered then it's required again. So I always find it a bit irritating if there appears to have been a renumbering which seems a bit pointless.

With that, I don't cont re-numbering. If I have got it one time when it had one number and it changed number, I wouldn't need to get it again. With the re-engining It does count ao I would need to get it again.

Thanks for all the replies! Certainly interesting how others bash stuff!

With regard re-numbering I tend to treat it as the same train. For example the Pendolinos I had as 3900xxs I counted as having when they became 3901xxs!

If some similar to a 47 to 57 rebuild happened again I would probably treat them as new and needing to get again.

Renumbered units are required again. If the units are reformed and additional coaches inserted, the original units count as "scored" when the new ones are. If coaches are taken out, the original units will count as forever lost.

So scoring 390154 counts as scoring 390054 too.

That's all the 313/2s cleared now. 313211 was the last out of the way Southern unit I needed. Just the 377/7s and a couple of 442s and 171s to complete Southern now, and they can all be done on Travelcards.

Yep, same here. Which is why I didn't get many 378/0s at the same, knowing they were being renumbered into 378/2s it was deemed a waste of effort to get them as /0s. Had a couple of them due to the way moves around London were made that day though.

I also find 'pointless' renumbering a real irritation. Hopefully the 378/2s don't get renumbered when they come back with their 5th coaches, and the 455s don't get renumbered when they eventually get AC motors!

Finished the 171/8s. Just need one /7 to clear the class now. Also got all 4 of the 377/7s that I needed. Just need 707 and 708 when they enter service now to complete the 377s.

You've certainly been quite busy lately TEW!

Nothing lately from me, my first trip in 4 weeks is due tomorrow (so long as I don't overdoss that is) and I really, REALLY can't wait! It's been a 6 day week at work this week, next week it's back to 5 and the one after that is 6 days again. So if I don't go out for the day tomorrow I'm going to have my time to do so for another 2.5 weeks or so, when my Kent Rover trip begins. Not willing to go nearly 7 weeks without a trip on the rails, it's been torture enough as it is lately!

Hopefully, fingers crossed, I'll have some red pen action but it depends on where I decide to go tomorrow. It's got to be a budget trip so not a lot of options whatsoever, but we'll see...

Cardiff for 150235 perhaps. Another idea is to do a West midlands day ranger/tripper, which both get to Hereford and out to Leamington Spa so you might be able to get a Chiltern 172 in...

Details of them here.

Cheers, a WMDR is very likely but I do also like the idea of a Daytripper as I'm informed there's new trams on Midland Metro now. Any ideas on that one? If so I might as well do the Daytripper to get them in!

I will look it up for you.:D
The Day-tripper does include the Midland Metro and the bus links around it. Hope you have a good time whatever you do.

The new trams aren't in service yet Techniquest. Sorry.

Nice one, most appreciated :D

I'll probably do a WMDR, although popping down to Cardiff for 150235 is not a bad idea either. Might even find 158960, 150120/131/216 about the place too!

One new one for me this month, 57605, scored while on holiday in Cornwall. Quite a significant one for me, as it was my last UK loco which regularly works service trains.

That's until the 'caterpillers' invade the Chiltern line in December.
