Some tips when noting Central line stock numbers as they enter a station.
Position yourself about where the front of the seventh car will stop, and using the old fashioned pen & paper method, just scribble down the last 3 digits of each 2 car set. Always worked for me.

Thanks, I can imagine that's going to be a lot easier than trying to note them with the eyes and find the right keys on the phone to type them in!

Hopefully I'll be scoring quite a few more sets down there next time I'm down, still need a lot of Central line stations but not so many as to take more than 2.5 hours out to do them all.

That's pretty much what I do, except I pre-write a column of four "92" prefixes.

Now, if you think these 1992 Stocks are fun to write down, try getting a 9 car rake of MS61 Stock on the Paris RER Line A... They come in pretty fast and not only is it one more carriage they're also longer ( 25m vehicles ) - fortunately a similar prefixing approach works as they are formed of three 3 car units, each 15xxx + 18xxx + 15xxx; in theory just noting the 18xxx will do but the formations aren't completely stable, so...

That's my last 377/4 done, and my last 319/0. Also my first 377/7 done. As I cleared my last /4 I just have to do the /7s to clear the class.

An interesting idea there with the pre-writing of the columns, depending on my moves next time I go down I'll try both methods and see what works best.

So you're basically trying to write down 9 numbers each time on Line A? Good grief, that's pretty challenging!

Nicely done, I have way too many 377s to go to count them right now. By a long way the highest number of any class (well, after the 66s that is!) to get, and I chose very badly on my move to get to 625+704 on Monday. I got dud 377411+377413 (hoping for /6s, I went to the suburban side, plus I needed that side to come back so it made sense. On top of all that I was really tired, having very little sleep during the night, so less walking made sense too!), then we get overtaken by a trio of 377s on the fasts. I note one winner, then two, then when I checked later I needed all three 377/1s on a Southampton/Bognor working. Boy I wasn't happy! :(

The 377s aren't that bad to do. If you spend a day, or even just a couple of hours, doing Clapham Junction-East Crodyon leaps you'd be surprised how many you get through. At just over 7 miles it's not a bad leap for mileage.

True stuff, it's more the /5s I'm going to struggle with it seems. My luck on those is almost nil! Nevertheless, it's one of the things I intend to try again next time I'm down (good golly gosh this list of stuff is getting way too long!), although I have no idea when I'll next be in London, not until the end of July at the earliest. For a proper full day, that's not going to be for a while unfortunately.

I need 132 377s now all in, including the other 7 377/7s I need. Just a few then  I do feel somewhat honoured one of the chiefs of red penning on the forum has replied to my post :D

Ah yes, the /5s are a bit of a pain. The rights ones never seemed to turn up for me either. In the end I managed to get the last couple in the evening peak. Most the fleet should be out then and as you can do such short hops in the Thameslink core you can normally manage not to miss any units.

Only for MS61 Stock; the rest of the stuff on the RER ( all parts of it ) is generally one or two units which are dual numbered in the same way as the S Stock is. Incidentally, series withdrawals of MS61 have started so if you want to enjoy their particularly musical motors, go now.

Good point, Thameslink offers easy leaps and quite frequent services so aye, my counts should come down well :) Just finding a day when I can do it all!

OMG - it has been years since I have heard that phrase. I used to use it in the early 1970's. Then grice it, score it, etc became all the rage. :D

Hope I can make you feel a bit better as I still need 230 377s for haulage :( . Although I am planning a few days down in London in July which will include a trip to Salisbury for 159s (never been there) before heading back for more SWT stock , half a day on 357s, a day on AGA, A day on Southern and Southeastern hopefully.

??

455806?

I would assume 455706, if you're not looking properly some of those 7s on the SWT 455s can look much more like 4s. Especially if you're looking at the number by the headlights, and even more so with that in the hours of darkness! Thank Goodness for the carriage numbers in such situations!

That does make me feel better aye, although you'd think with the amount of 377 bashing I've done in the last few years that I'd be much closer than I am!

Not too often you hear of people who've been on the scene a while who need 159s, although if you're based up north it's reasonable I suppose.

Most of your cranking I'm guessing will be in the Travelcard area I guess? It'll cost you a lot otherwise! Certainly sounds like you're going to have a monster cranking session, I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Very observant! Was indeed 5706. I had it down correctly in my spreadsheet, just a slip of the fingers typing it in here.

Erm.....sort of. I have my own special Travelcard that offers unlimited travel around the country :D....although that does start to show my age as they are no longer issued :(

Do you mean the box? Also known as a golden pass. I would love to have one of them.

Probably means one of the status passes as "boxes" only give you a certain number of days each year.

Anyway, a quick count-up from my recent travels reveals 37 new ranging from a 600mm steam loco to four of these beasts :D

I've worked on the railway for nearly 23 years now so I started in the days of British Rail so still have grandfather rights to free and cheap travel. As to boxes with over 10 years service I get 16 boxes, which equates to 32 days free travel as each box is valid for 48 hours so I try and make the most of them.

Very nice, incredibly jealous! My expenditure on rail travel alone in the first half of 2014 looks set to clear £500 after Monday, and I can only imagine the amount of stuff I'd do with 48 hours of free travel! <D

From a trip to Nottingham I got NET no 209 as the new one. I also got 206 but that was one I already had.

My notation method since a year or so ago is Google Keep - it's fairly quick to dig out and can be pulled up directly from a PC later to save you having to read through it all on the phone screen. Partly to initially disguise what I was documenting, I used a code to write down the unit numbers, rather than the whole numbers themselves. In practice, it works out quicker for LUL stock, but longer-winded for proper national stock, but having got used to it, it's second nature to write now - as an example if I travel on 2009TS car 11024, I consider that train 12 of the set, so simply record V12.
The letter I used for the 92TS on the central line since that was being discussed is E (as C was used for C stock), so if travelling on 92213 that would be E213.
Coding each class on the national network was a bit more complex though, I ended up doing it alphanumerically - i.e. substituting letters for numbers, such as for 321336 it would be CUC36.
Since I ended up recording my journeys the same way, my note files can look quite messy!

e.g.
CUC36 1745LST SOV A1808SNF

The underground complicated matters further without having a published timetable, so rather than used the timetabled departure, I used actual departure time, and the destinations of the trains around it so I could, if I wanted, gather what service it was by looking at the journey planner. Here's an example from thursday:
1729 SC40 1733ZFD (M30/31, CM +2/4) A1756WEH
SC would denote an S7 - the original idea being the C denoted it would replace a C stock, but in the end I just used SC for all S7s, since with a combined fleet you can't really tell some of the time.

I wouldn't feel too bad about having a small list of 377s - I have a mere 32 to my name at the moment, across all the subclasses! :(

OK then,

I did get a 67 in today but it was one I already had. 67014 was the one in question.

Hmm, this is worth looking into. Should I remember to do so later, I'll research it later :)

That's very complicated! I don't bother disguising my notes, everyone I know knows what I do and it doesn't bother me anyway. A typical entry in my memo file would read like this:

"153334+170514 HFD-BHM(p8b)(via WOS)(0849,arr 1021,1u)"

Same problem with light rail here, so a typical Underground journey in my memo file would read like this:

"11017+11018 Euston-Seven Sisters(1648,arr 1658)"

Of course, we all have different ways of logging these things! I never used to note the arrival time, but after I got RailMiles I started logging it and have done ever since.

I wouldn't feel too bad about having a small list of 377s - I have a mere 32 to my name at the moment, across all the subclasses! :(

Ouch! At least there should be no more 377s coming now, unless I've missed something!

Yeah I see no reason to do it any more, but force of habit I suppose - abbreviating the station codes makes it easier to write down - assuming I know them of course!

Whilst LUL trains don't have 'traditional' headcodes, couldn't you use the train reporting number (3 digit one) on the front, eg:

units train no time route
21420/19 076 0805 Wim-ERd
7008 + 7503 037 1058 Upm-Brk

&c.

92041 became my 21st class 92 yesterday and the highest mileage one as well, quite rare to get such a long run behind one. Ta Retro for an excellent day out (and to the other forum members for putting up with me ;)). Shame the 66 was dud.

PS Also should note that I had my first 377/7 last week, no doubt they will soon become as common as muck on the MKC services.
