I was at Marlow station this morning (7:10) and noticed the info board stated "if you board the train without a ticket you may be charged by full single or return fare for your journey plus an additional charge in Penalty Fares areas"

As there are not ticketing facilities at Marlow this seems not to quite fit?

I see that you are also encouraged to buy your ticket through the FGW website. Presumably the guard on the train will then just check your booking reference.

I got a day return to Paddington from Marlow with travelcard using senior railcard last week from the guard with no problem. Other people got tickets on the train.
I didn't see the notice referred to. It does seem anomalous. I assume the same applies at Bourne End

I noticed the connection time on the 7:17 and 8:17 trains to London at Bourne End is three or so mins so arguably no time to collect at BE.

So does this mean you haven't left reasonable enough time so have to miss the connection and wait an hour (?) for the next train?

Otherwise you get to the gateline at Paddington and the world of pain starts

I think this notice is a bit naughty. I can understand that something needs to be said to stop a passenger thinking they can get on a train at any other station without buying a ticket and saying "Well, when I was at Marlow the other day I read the notice and it said I had to buy the ticket on the train, which I did. Why not now?"

Would better wording be:
"if you board the train without a ticket from a station where you can buy a ticket, you may be charged the full single or return fare for your journey plus an additional charge in Penalty Fares areas"

ATW have notices to this effect up at all their stations, regardless of what facilities they have. They have even more prominent warnings though with Penalty Fare style signs.

They need to remove the "If you board..." sentence. The rest is fine.

Perhaps someone can ask them for a date by when the posters will be appropriate and correct?

Or add "... at stations with ticket buying facilities..."
