I want to buy a ticket from Guildford to Audley End, but want to stop at Stansted Airport on the way, is this valid?

I am not sure about using the fare check rule, as Audley End's routing points are Cambridge, which is more expensive and Stansted group, of which the airport is more expensive but MOUNTFITCHET is less expensive, so I am not entierly sure on the situation, as to travelling via the Airport.

First step when you've a query like this: go to National Rail, put in your proposed route and see what comes out. In this case, it says "Yes" you can do this on an Anytime Day Single at £31.40.

I believe its valid via Stansted Airport only by virtue of Stansted Airport being a member of Stansted Routeing Group. This is allowed "for interchange purposes only", which the commonly held interpretation is that you cannot leave station premises.

You do not need to perform fares check for intermediate stations (in this case Stansted Airport).

Fares check is only for the purpose of deciding appropriate routeing points (for Audley End in this case). Mountfitchit fare is cheaper than Audley End (so appropriate) but Cambridge more expensive (so not appropriate). Once you have determined appropriate routeing points, you can start finding out about mapped routes.

Once all mapped routes are found, you can then find out whether a BoJ is permitted at Stansted Airport, depending on whether it is en route along one of the permitted routes.

Not sure if you're thinking of a ticket to Elsenham - with this you need to doubleback to Stansted Mountfitchet to continue your journey to Elsenham. But you can get a direct train from Stansted Airport to Audley End without having to doubleback to Stansted Mountfitchet. It seems to me quite a reasonable route.

Also it might be prudent to take the Victoria line to Tottenham Hale and join the train towards Stansted there rather than at Liverpool Street; this should avoid any chance of Negative Easement 700455 kicking in (Customers travelling from or via Broxbourne to London Liverpool Street and beyond, may not travel via Stansted Airport. This easement applies in both directions.).

I wasn't thinking of Elsenham - I just didn't realise that Cross Country stop at Audley End. In which case, this is fine as long you one doesn't double back to Stansted Mountfitchet

Yes exactly - while technical validity is one thing, I think this makes it much easier to justify if you ever get into a situation where you need to explain yourself. Hence I always buy a ticket to/from Audley End (rather than the cheaper Elsenham ticket) if I need to be at Stansted Airport. I've even bought such a ticket from the booking office there and shown it to barrier staff a couple of times, and all have been fine with it.
