If you had £10 million to spend

I would build a narrow gauge steam railway over the scenic Rutland water dam providing an attractive ride along the shore from Whitwell harbour to Edith Weston and Normanton Church, 3 mile run each way, just right for all those that cant walk or ride the perimeter track and as the area is a tourist magnet, I am sure it would fare well. and not a difficult project to engineer if permission could be obtained from Anglian Water which would add to the attractions tourism. heading further along either way becomes a bit more tricky in terms of engineering but is expandable and opens the area to those of limited mobility as well
Hell could even push right into Oakham:D

Probably go for 15 inch gauge due to need to have enclosed or semi enclosed stock for inclement weather and a max speed of 10 mph. some sections would need segregation but the majority could be unfenced

one day LOL

I'd chuck it all at the Strathspeys Rails to Grantown Project, with prioritty given to making the stations on it accessible so that when the line does reach there, a DMU could run all year between Aviemore and Grantown suplimenting the very popular but irregular service offered by the 34 bus. Maybe a home for the first ever preserved class 153 or first Scottis Pacer service?

I'd reinstate the route between Redmire and Garsdale. The route remains completely intact and the tunnel and viaduct (can't remember their names ) appear to be in good condition.
This link suggests that all is not well with Mossdale Head Tunnel - the lining through one part does indeed look very precarious!

One idea I do have which will get backing of a entire City :o

I would look at reinstating avoiding lines for Lincoln so freight or services which don't call at Lincoln Central can use the avoiding line to avoid the city centre of course I doubt my money would meet all the costs involved so would also depend on Network Rail, local Government also coughing up funds.

OR build a flyover at Werrington Junction so freight heading via Lincoln can access the March lines without crossing the existing Down/Up March & Up/Down Fasts & Up Slow.

Not that it's a preserved railway (as per the OP) anyway, but a reinstated avoiding line would do nothing for the vast majority of freight (to/from Barnetby) at present. It'd only be of use for trains between Sleaford and Gainsborough, though admittedly there might be a few more of these in coming years.

I'd spread it out between some projects and overhauls:

Both the P2 projects
The Baby Deltic
The Brighton Belle
The Unknown Warrior
The LMS 1002
Duke of Gloucester overhaul
Saving 90050 for preservation and subsequent restoration
Saving an ex-Virgin DVT from Long Marston for preservation
DELTIC back in working order
(...and Tulyar!)

Or I'd look into having a small fleet of loco-hauled sets for London Midland that could be deployed at peak hours allowing some units to double-up. Thinking 86+six mk2s+DVT, exclusively on the Birmingham Cross-City line. :D

Or, researching and developing a method for electric locos to move with the pantograph down: eg possibly a 'battery coach' behind the loco that feeds it juice. I dunno.

Eh?
About the only thing that loco is any good for is as a (leaky) garden shed, the words 'stripped bare' doesnt even come close.

Ten million should cover it then... :D

60163 has 10 things on his list so it would only be 1 million available, should still be enough but the answer has to be why?

I wouldnt mind though, it is one of the few I havent been hauled by!;)

Good point..
I geuss there is more chance of getting hold of 90050 than there is of getting hold of one of the DBS ones.. they would clearly rather let them rot away!!!!

Prototypes - Rebuild 210001 and save and secure a future for 150s 150001 & 150002 - They are after all the first signs of 'the new BR', the sprinterisation era and in my book remain a part of the history of British Railways.

Extend the Severn Valley to Ironbridge.

Next to Zero chance for that.

Extend towards Stourport would/ might be possible though.

SVR Diesel Shed for covered storage
P2 Projects
LMS Patriot
82045 Project

Others will have to think about though.

Sorry for digging up an old topic, but this one largely fits the purpose of the new one I was going to make, so:

If I had £10m to spend, I'd build a new LNER B17, numbered 2873/61673. The name carried on the new locomotive would be whichever team are the current F.A Cup holders. Perhaps the Football Association could sponsor it and cover any excess above the £10m budget!

Probably give back-handers to a council to ensure an extension of a chosen line could proceed to join up with the main line. I'm not saying which council incase I'm sued

I'd search out where Beeching is buried, buy the land and crane in a piece or two of track and a rusty loco to sit right on top of him

Duplicated

Worth it!

Better to put a Mk3 there, open it as a restaurant with the toilet waste pipe right over his final resting place. That should stop any undead-related activity!

I would use it to build a 5AT
Advanced technology steam loco, suitable for use on modern main lines, service speed 113 MPH, could probably run faster on a "one of" basis and and perhaps break the world record for steam.
Might cost a bit more than £10,000,000. But with the greater part of the cost covered it should be relatively easy to raise the rest.

If it lived up to expectations, then a few more could be built at far lower unit cost than the first one. Such locos would be a splendid sight on main line charters, and in an oil poor future might even be worth regular use if diesel became unaffordable. (coal fired of course, not oil)

Here's my list:
  • Get 303032 back to mainline-running condition.
  • Do the same with 309616 & 309624. (And possibly get all 3 units together on a railtour)
  • Contribute to the 'Unknown Warrior' project.
  • Restore 'DELTIC' (and Tulyar) back to running order.
  • Get 18000 back up & running, with a diesel engine at least.
  • Contribute to the 'Baby Deltic' project.
  • Get both the APT-P & the APT-E back to running order. (Probably the most insane one on this list)
  • Get a Class 25 running on the mainline.
  • Get 89001 back to mainline-running condition.
That's my list, as insane as it is.
