How would shareholders benefit?
Shareholders would benefit because the extra money saved by downgrading the job conductors currently do and paying them less would be pocketed by the shareholders of whoever is running the franchise . But some passengers and others naively think that this saving would lead to lower fares and more investment when in reality it wont . It will lead to a lower subsidy being attracted by the franchise as operating costs are lowered , which will mean the difference in conductors vs customer service bods pay will be absorbed by the shareholders so they dont loose their current level of profit .
And any investment that does come from the government is going to be used first and foremost to fund the implementation of DOO . Then when passengers are reading all the stats about the gov has implemented £100mil in the railway up north they will wonder where this money has gone but there wont be a member of railway staff in sight to ask the question to
And what is the problem with making a profit?
There is no problem with making a profit per se IMO .However that has got to be done in a way that is responsible to both society and whoever it is you are making a profit from . Be that your employees , customers of your business etc etc . for instance all of the big multinationals that have been involved in some of the tax avoidance scandals are making profit in an irresponsible manner . In the case of the railway one of the big things you have to factor in is the safety of the traveling public as well as the pay and conditions for your staff and your environmental responsibilities .
Nobody is forcing anyone to be a bus driver.....if they dont like their T&Cs the solution is simple.......work elsewhere.
Indeed as business is a business its not a charity for its employees
Whilst it is true that nobody is forcing anybody to do any job and businesses are not charities for their employees , surely any person working full time should be able to attract a living wage . Otherwise you have the problem we currently have where loads of people in work but working for minimum wage are also in receipt of benefits , which is basically anybody that pays tax subsidizing companies that are paying the minimum wage .
Besides if only it where as easy as walking out of the job you dont like because of the pay and conditions and walking into one the next day with favorable conditions . I know loads of graduates who cant even get a job working in Tesco let along a graduate job with a graduate salary . Its just not as easy as finding a job that pays well right away , surely as you said Moonshot the number of people applying for northern rail vacancies shows that people are looking and trying to change up for better pay and conditions . But until they reach that goal surely we should all be able to attract a living wage for whatever job it is that we do .
As for the whole DOO debate , I am relatively new to being a guard , and there is a heck of a lot more to the job than what I thought even when I started training . I knew it was safety critical but I didn't realize I would have to have route knowledge and rules and traction knowledge in as much depth as I have now.Its basically to the point where if the driver cant take power it is the guards job to investigate any problems with the interlocking and the drivers to decide if it could be a mechanical fault with the drivetrain . As well as knowing our location at all times . Be that for the purpose of reporting delays to control , reporting trespass or safety of the line incidents or in the event of an emergency situation requiring attendance of one of more emergency service or an evacuation of the train controlled or otherwise .
Another problem I foresee with going DOO is that whilst all best intentions might be there to always roster two members of staff to every train (A driver and non safety crit customer service bod). It wouldn't be long before cost cutting measures or staff sickness or low staff morale would lead to there being a shortage of these and then you have trains running without this safety crit member of staff because operationally its not a requirement , We then turn our rail network into past memories of the new york subway after dark as antisocial behavior rises to stupid levels . It already goes on now with guards in place but it would only get worse with no member of staff there to . discourage/report/summon assistance .
