Between the parallel lines
Lines should now be reopening. I believe services towards Banbury resumed first (or so say NRE).

I should imagine that delays were either due to damage to the train, or perhaps a suspicion that the dog walker had also been hit / that they might attempt to go on the line.

Whilst dog being on the line are no longer cause to stop the job I would always treat it as seriously as a person being hit (perhaps not the red button on GSMR but certainly the yellow) as there is a very real possibility of the owner trying to collect the corpse or climbing through the same hole in the fence to try and find their lost pet. I can sadly think of 3 fairly recent incidents involving dogs on the lines and in all three the dogs owner was either on the line or had to be restrained by other passengers or staff as they attempted to get onto the line.

A while back a certain pop stars dog got onto the track and under a train near Hadley wood. A mom was taken there immediately and the lines blocked in the middle of the day whilst he retrieved the corpse as there was fear that people may try to get it incase there was a reward or press story in it as the dogs demise had quickly been plastered on social media.

Any pet owner will tell you that a pet becomes part of the family and people will react to tragically watching their pet on the line in the same way they would if it was their partner or child.

I personally disagree with the rule about not stopping the job for a dog as I feel there is a very strong risk of people on the line in a state of mind which means they may not take the dangers of the line seriously.

Not forgetting the case on the sea wall near Teignmouth several years ago where two women were killed while trying to retrieve their dogs from the tracks. Incredibly they'd walked along the narrow sea wall with a low wall separating them from the track without keeping their dogs on a lead.

As a more general comment, one of the main causes for call outs of the Coast Guard and Lifeboats in Devon is dogs falling from cliffs. Who in their right mind would walk along a cliff top without keeping their dog on a lead?

Probably the same stupid dog owners that I have seen that let their dog(s) loose in a field of cows.
