Ignoring specialist services eg football specials, trains to racecourses etc; thinking has a route ever been timetabled for general use and then been removed (again - ignoring for essential line works) well before the next timetable change?
If so, for what reason/s?

Can't think of any personally, maybe a few trains ran on the timetable to Oldham and were took off for the metrolink to be established, although that would be covered under *maintainance* presumably.

I bet there are some though? Anyone??

Can't think of any that have lasted less than one timetable period (Dec-May or May-Dec). Closest I can think of is London Midland's shuttle between Worcester and Gloucester, lasted less than two years I believe.

Not sure on this one, but how long did half-hourly trains last on Redhill-Tonbridge?

Two for consideration-

Chee Dale station lasted only for one summer in 1987 served by advertised ramblers specials from Edale and district.
Heathrow Junction was the temporary terminus of services for 6 months in 1998 before Heathrow Airport opened.

Was the former stopped due to low numbers, just an experiment, or some other reason?

Amazingstoke-Ipswich was a tad over two years from summer 2000-summer 2002.
Manchester-Brighton was around for a very long time, since the 1980s at least as a regular service I believe.

Hard to call it Ipswich-Basingstoke as many services never made it that far North with turnrounds at Witham & even Stratford for best stock utilisation, though we must remember that there was an 07.38 through from Norwich with an evening return that arrive around 21.40 weekdays & later timed ones over the weekend. This SX service was formed by 170399 with its SWT interior. These poorly used yet growing trains even had trolley catering which at times took such as much at £30 in a 9hr shift!! Hatfield finally killed off this service which was supposed to evolve into a triangle of Ipswich-Southampton/Southampton-Milton Keynes/Milton Keynes-Ipswich, but i have a feeling it was just an excuse as more lucrative use could be made with these units. SWT also upped the game on their main line to use up paths that where intended for this & cl73 hauled 'premier' services from Southampton (Harbour i seem to recall) to Waterloo also operated by GB Railways.

Did that for a Gillette Cup cricket match. Arrived back in Manchester 3am the following day. BUT - might have been a cricket special, like one was Picc/Southampton for the same tournament. Could you/can you do manchester-Southampton in one go these days? Via Reading??

It was well used and would be even more popular if it was running today and I remember using it on at least one occasion. Sadly, as Richard has pointed out the signaling was not up to standard and the service finished at the end of the summer.

Edinburgh to Carlisle via Newcastle stopping service, started 1981 and lasted about 2 years. Incredibly when it first started a Deltic was the booked motive power.

How long did First North Western run into Euston ? Some had weird calling points (eg Leyland but not Preston) due to competition rules.

How long did the Sinfin branch service last (Melbourne Junction to Sinfin Central) as an extension of the Derby - Matlock service)? Four years, around 1986-7, perhaps?

It was initially conceived in the era of the first generation (Class 120 in this case) units and loadings were consistently non-existent. If we needed a unit for something else it became almost standard to pinch the Sinfin unit at 0735 in from Matlock and step up to cover its return working which was the 0821 to Matlock by using the 0834 arrival from Matlock about 15 mins late. The passengers (if there were any) were conveyed in a taxi.

It eventually died when units with TCAs were banned from the branch. Etches Park had had the Class 150/1 from new and the Class 120s were either scrapped or moved to Scotland. The 150/1s worked the branch initially but it was found that they did not conform to the standards for vehicles to operate track circuits (as did none of the early "sprinter" fleet).

TCAs were retro-fitted and it was found that the use of these TCA fitted units would cause erratic operation of the Lucas track circuits that were in use on the branch, which in turn caused, amongst other things, loss of detection on the 3 (or was it 4?) interworked ground frames on the branch. The "service" (if it could be called that) was operated by a taxi for a while and then died the death.

I know were are talking about regular service trains here, but, going off at a tangent, Ramsline Halt must qualify for some sort of award - only ever used by four football trains, but still there, complete with some signage. Even the Baseball Ground, which it served, is long gone.

I can remember being the sole occupant of one of these - if I remember correctly I got on at Rugby and went to Tamworth quite late in the evening. I was on my own - totally!

The only one I can think of is a tube station and not a National Rail route.

North End station, on the Edgware branch of the Northern Line, had its platforms built but Henrietta Barnett decided to purchase nearby land. The CCE&HR was going to place housing on that land, but since they couldn't have it anymore, they decided to close the station before a single train or passenger had used it. The lift shafts and street-level building were never completed but you can see the southbound platform on the Northern Line between Hampstead and Golders Green.

I remember using a direct service from Fokstone to Didcot. Can't remember it's actual destination. I think too it was only a one-way service as I don't recal seeing a time for the same service from Didcot to Folkstone!I still had to go via London.

It wasn't a fast journey for sure. It went via Dover, Canterbury and around London to North Pole Junction before getting onto the Western Mainline, stopping all over the place. However, it was nice to have a direct service and not have to change in London. This service didn't last long, perhaps a year or two!

Watford - Liverpool Street after Broad Street station closed didnt last long especially given new infrastructure was put in for it

Charing Cross to Green Park on the Jubilee line which while it lasted a few decades must be one of the most expensive short lived services

Oxford (or was it Bicester) to Bristol direct service.

A well loaded and useful service. I believe it was withdrawn due to pathing issues of the stock available.

I'm not sure what timeframe the OP had in mind, but if you want some ancient history .....

On the Lancashire Union Railway, east of Wigan, two new stations were opened at Whelley and Amberswood (near Hindley) on 1 Jan 1872. The LUR ran 3 passenger trains a day on the Whelley - St. Helens - Liverpool route. The service lasted 2 months. It was withdrawn on 1 March 1872, the stations closed, never to be re-opened.

The Lancashire Union subsequently amalgamated with the L&NWR and the Whelley line became well known as an eastern bypass to Wigan for freight, through passenger and excursion trains up until the 1970s. However in the brief period when Whelley and Amberswood stations were open, the LUR was effectively a separate railway, the connections at Standish and Bamfurlong Junctions only being built in the 1880s.

2 months between opening and closing (and demolition) of new stations must be a record!

Manchester Airport to Edinburgh via York which was run as a temporary service during engineering works.

Or going back in time there was a 3 hourly Rhyl to Altrincham service on Sundays when Manchester Piccadilly was being redeveloped and there were engineering works between Rhyl and Holyhead at the same time.

How long did the Great Western HST service from Waterloo to Bristol via Reading last? IIRC, it was operating around about 1996 or 1997.

About the time of the Bicester<->Bristols I think I remember seeing the odd direct service from Paddington to Bicester Town - or did I imagine that?

No, some Oxford services were extended all the way through to Bicester.

The reason given for stopping the Direct Oxford to Bristol trains was the pathing of the Didiot Power Station coal trains. Now that they are gone peraps they could have a fresh look at this possibility, especially with the Cross-Country service in the pipeline and the Chord too and from Marylebone that could open up numerous extra journies.

Running East West Rail to Bristol instead of Reading might open up quite a few interesting possibilities. Or going off somewhere down the Melksham route.

There was of course the open access Wrexham & Shropshire train company which operated a Marylebone-Wrexham service using class 67's and DVT which only lasted a couple of years before the company went bust in 2010-11.

Also, Virgin re-introduced a Shrewsbury-Euston service in 1998, but that only lasted until 2001.
