A southern unit in the midlands!

Hello all

Not too sure if this is the right place to post this, a few weeks ago I saw a "southern" emu briefly on the rugby to Northampton branch-I thought I was dreaming!, I don't know if it was coupled up to a 380 LM unit if it wasn't,do Southern have any units that can do Ac & Dc? And also travel as far as the midlands?

Hello mate, it's one of the brand new Class 377/7's for Southerns Croydon to Milton Keynes line, being tested up to Rugby. Hope this helps

Correct...theyve been testing 2x5 car units up and down the WCML for some time....they have been running into Bay platform 3 at Rugby.

The most northerly place southern serve in normal service is Milton Keynes Central. However, during the last few months, southern have been testing their new class 377/7 units along the WCML.

Southern currently have a number of dual voltage (overhead line and third rail) units classified as class 377/2. They are also leasing out class 377/5 units to First Capital Connect. The new class 377/7 will also be dual voltage and will provide more capacity on southern's croydon to Milton Keynes route.

Class 319s were a common sight as far north as Rugby in Connex colours on the Gatwick Airport service.
The service was subsequently cut back to Milton Keynes-East Croydon.
Before very long, there should be a stream of 319/3s heading north to join Northern at Allerton.
There is also some 110mph testing going on on the WCML using 377s I think.

If you are lucky, you may see Southern livered Class 377s on hire to First Capital Connect travelling up the Midland Mainline on a service from Bedford to Brighton (or vice versa)

Thanks for info all, it was only a glimpse of a unit between houses and only saw southern on the side, and thought either the mk service had been extended or LM had issues with some of their traction!

That's stopped for now. Should return next month.

There's no 110mph 377 testing. A 379 was used for 110mph testing last year ahead of the 387 build testing.

Saw one (well 2 together) tonight, heading south just north of Roade. Busy old evening. Also saw a million pendo's, a few voyagers, a smattering of 350's, a 92 on containers, and 3x325's running south. A little later I heard something on the Northampton loop that sounded like a small diesel (had this been 30 years ago, I would have sworn it was a 25. 20, and I'd suppose it was a 31!) Any ideas or gen welcomed!

Yes, I think there's two 5 car units in service now, saw the first passenger run on Monday doing MKC-Croydon runs! Although they were already in service the week previous to that on Tattenham corner/Epsom trains!
