I have an RTV dated 29 May 2013, is it still valid to use today?

I've just been refused it's use at a ticket offic because "it expired yesterday"

Nope, one year would have expired 28/05 I'm afraid. Much similar to a season ticket.

Try contacting the issuing authority, in some cases they might issue another voucher.

"Twelve Months from 29th May 2013" includes 29th May 2013, thus it does not include 29th May 2014. You could ask the issuer of the RTV if they will exchange it for another one, but they are under no obligation to do so as I understand it.

Thanks all. It was issued by NRES for taking part in a focus group so no great loss.
London Midland at Gravelly Hill refused it. Virgin at New Street were willing to accept it today but the barcode was unreadable so suggested returning it to NRES for re-issue.

Hah, I've always gone for the Love2Shop vouchers when attending the focus groups – for the exact reason that in this age of limited ticket office opening hours and cheapest tickets often being available online only (thanks to special offers), RTVs tend to be more trouble than they're worth.

If you want the e-mail address of one of the NRE staff who carries out the focus groups, let me know; perhaps you can arrange for a reissue.

Well surely that should be the reason for returning it?

Is the expiry date encoded in the barcode? This might explain why it wouldn't scan.

Specifying a time limit by saying that you have a particular period "from" a specified date is notoriously ambiguous, as you end up in an argument about whether the specified date is or is not part of the period. It is much clearer to say something like "one year beginning with 29th May 2013" or "the year whose first day is 29th May 2013", both of which would give you one year which ends as 28th May 2014 draws to a close.

There needs to just be a last date of validity on it.
E.G. Only valid on and before 28th May 2014

Absolutely.

Btw I think the OP is asking for trouble leaving it to the very last day. You should have sought out solutions at least a couple of weeks in advance.

I still think it's stupid that these things expire. You're given them for the inconvenience of a delayed train. The same train doesn't magically become on time a year later...

Unfortunately IIRC it was the last one of the day and they were running low on the shopping vouchers. If you can PM the email address I will try that route.

Probably, but I'd forgotten about it until a couple of weeks ago, had tried to get it credited to Oyster without success last time I was in London, and have been out of the country twice since. I ended up only wanting to use it for the sake of using it.
