Diesel Haulage in Germany

Good evening all. I have asked a similar question to this last year. I am planning another trip to Hungary this summer for the M61 and the two M40 turns. Once again we will come home by train. I remember someone telling me of double headed 218s (or something like that) running from Munich to Lindau, I think. Do they still till run and if so which train or trains are they on? Any other tips or info is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking Hungary to Vienna, Vienna-Munich (or all in one hit if possible) then to Lindau. Not sure after that either to Ulm-Cologne-Brussels and home or Zurich-Paris and home. Thanks.

Pairs work the EuroCity trains between Munich and Lindau and vice versa on the Zurichs.

You are absolutely right to travel via München, as Bavaria and other surrounding areas is essentially the main hotbed of remaining diesel haulage in Germany. Indeed the München - Zürich trains represents one of the last (the last?) loco hauled inter-city service connecting two major European cities, especially non-electric.

Ooh, this is getting better. Can you tell me please which way they go. From Munich to Lindau and then from Lindau to Zurich (I thought that was under the wires). More piccys would be good if anyone has them please.

Yes. An hourly service, generally running from Ulm - Lindau.

218 diagrams can be found HERE on the v160 website. The ones currently on there date from the timetable change last December and there are likely to have been a few changes since, particularly when the summer dated trains started running but the München / Lindau ones probably haven't changed.

Lindau is the limit of diesel haulage and the limit of DB territory. The Zürich trains hand over to Swiss Re421 electric locos which haul the trains via the corner of Austria before passing into Switzerland at St Margrethen

The München - Lindau line is called the Allgaubahn - KBS970 (KBS = Kursbuchstrecke = timetable route number)

Thanks for all the info and piccies. Most likely sleepers Budapest to Munich then to Lindau for the day (what's it like?) Home next day via Ulm-Cologne and Brussels.

Lindau is quite small, I quite like the bar in the station. Bayern ticket is not valid on the EC Munich-Lindau-Zurich so you'll either need Spar (savings) tickets or full price tickets

If you leave Lindau and head to Ulm via Friedrichshafen, there is an hourly service with 218s and double deck stock. There is the odd working which still uses single deck 'fresh air' stock as well - if you look on the Ulm diagrams on the link posted above, those diagrams starting with TB are the ones. If you're around that way on a weekend, the TB diagram which does Ulm - Neustadt/Rottweil is a lovely run with a 218 and 'real' stock and is well recommended, going deep into the Black Forest.

On your way from Munich to Lindau, if you study the Kempten 218 diagrams you may be able to bag one of these on 'real' stock on a Munich - Memmingen working, and pick up the EC train to Lindau there.

Just back from Germany, and to confirm and expand on the above:
double 218s on the Lindau-Munich section of the Zurich trains;
singles (push-pull, mostly double-deckers) on the Ulm/Friedrichshafen trains;
and also diesel-hauled 'Alex' trains with oldish compartment stock and newish locos (Eurorunner?, 223 065 was in one of my photos) on Lindau-Munich services - e.g. the third photo in their gallery here: http://www.alex.info/de/ueber_uns/medien/fotogalerie/

And if you're in Lindau on a hot summer's evening, watch out for the shockingly pink arms and legs of slightly overcooked Germans after a day by the lake.

Sorry, yes, was on phone and couldn't remember the name of the town at the centre of the "star." I think the through service from Linz may have gone though.

Other diesel areas are in the North - 218s still for a few months on Hannover-Bad Harzburg and the Sylt/Fehmarn ICs, and modern diesels on the other Hamburg-Westerlands.
