This now-demolished viaduct, originally two track then widened to four track, carried railway traffic from the Miles Platting area to the former Manchester and Leeds Railway terminus of Manchester Oldham Road railway station, which then became a goods traffic station after the opening of Manchester Victoria railway station.

Has anyone any information on any early railway society railtours that may have traversed upon this viaduct ?

I was on a railtour that started from Oldham Road in the early 1960s. Will need to search old notes to check date & tour details.

I had hoped there may have had been a forum member who had actually been upon such a railtour, so I do hope that you can return to the thread with destination details of that railtour and of the route taken.

Incidentally, it was said that the local women in the area of the viaduct from Livesey Street up to Linacre Street knew of a certain mid-afternoon heavily loaded goods train that was notorious for its flecks that were expelled from the train during its run up to Miles Platting and always made sure that no washing was pegged out at that time of the day...:D

The Central Lancashire Railtour was on 17 September 1960, run by the Roch Valley Railway Enthusiasts Society. It started from Manchester Oldham Road, and visited Chadderton Goods, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Woolfold, Bury, Bolton, Chorley, Blackburn, Great Harwood, Todmorden Curve, Rochdale, Bury avoiding line, Ringley Road, Clifton Jn, terminating at Manchester Victoria. 50850 (L&YR 2-4-2T) took the train out of Oldham Road. 52271 (L&YR) assisted with other parts of the tour.
More details appear on the Six Bells website.

Slightly off topic, but there is still a sizeable chunk of the viaduct left. It runs from Osborne Street to Collyhurst Street (where the Oldham Road lines joined the mainline).

I understand that the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Society are having a "Lanky Days Out" trip on Sunday, 6th July (I presume for members only of the society) that will start at 10.30 am from the remaining truncated viaduct of the junction of New Allen Street and Osborne Street and using members cars, will follow the railway line as far as the Summit tunnel to see what still remains of any LYR artifacts en route.

Summit tunnel itself must count as a fairly substantial LYR artifact !
