I fail to see the link between being a graduate and having any better ability than anybody else to drive a train? The skills required by train drivers are based largely on natural ability, not on anything you are likely to have picked up doing a degree, and it is arguable that those of a more mature and life-experienced variety are likely to offer a broader and more fitting range of attributes.

Is there some form monetary or other benefit for FL behind doing this? Seems an entirely silly initiative otherwise.

I believe you have misinterpreted the advert. It's not for university graduates. It is to apply to be a freightliner train graduate. This is the job I applied for last December and am starting in two weeks time (I have no degree!)

Only loose connection I can think of is that those with degrees have shown commitment to a long course and the ability to work alone on a given task (Similar to training). Still strange to leave out other skilled workers who might not have a degree

As said above, I can't really understand the thinking behind this vacancy??? The only thing I can think of, is that they are looking to fill some high level positions further down the line and want Graduate level applicants with Rail freight experience. Although, that is one hell of a long shot and a costly one at that.

Regarding the link not working, it is Freightliners site. It is notoriously bad. I wish anyone applying the best of luck just getting the application completed fully and to do so without blowing their brains out. The best advice I could give, would be to cut and paste everything you write onto notepad, and to save at every possible opportunity, as your 176th re-write will become a tad grating.

I don't have a degree but was taken on to the graduate course in November. Due to pass out in approximately 2 months! It's their title for a trainee driver. Best of luck to all who apply, it's well worth it

Have to say it's a bit odd for them to use the phrase 'graduate scheme'. It has a pretty well known meaning in the jobs market, that's fairly clearly defined.

Yes! As lincoln biker said this is the position both of us applied for and neither had a degree!

If you actually read the advert you'll see its an advert for trainee drivers - my points of concern is that there is no figure of a starting salary or locations of depots - bearing in mind the vacancy is for Heavy Haul. Any ideas??

I don't think that graduates should be in any industry, they should start at the bottom and work their way up with everyone else. I wonder how many industries there are where all managers at all levels of management have started at the bottom and have worked their way up.

I did mine at Crewe and another course were at Ferrybridge.

Gents, the term Graduate driver has nothing to do with graduates, the term refers to trainee drivers "off the streets". The starting salary is around 18k rising to 24k part training rising to 48k upon completion of training and working your first booked turn. Heavy Haul locations are varied and you can be allocated to any depot.

Hahaha...Just wondering if some people misunderstand the term ASSessment. My advice is don't wear tight trousers, you will not be favoured in anyway .

Winefarm, as FHH is shifting more towards Network Rail, the shift patterns will be a majority of nights and weekend work, but still they are a ver good company to work for....Keep your nose clean and you will have a job for life.
With regards to locations, they are allocated when they have recruits in place.
