Salford - Leeds over two days

Outwards is next Saturday; 17/05 arriving before 5pm, return is literally as early as possible on Sunday 18/05. (IE early hours trains). Have a 16-25 Railcard.

Cheapest I can find is an off peak day return at £10.70 from Manchester Pic to Leeds via Hebden Bridge, which is valid from SLD by virtue of the itinerary being Man Pic - Salford Crescent- Man Vic - Leeds.

However, this is a very slow route. Are there any cheaper options, or ways to get the quicker trains at the same price?

The fare price you have quoted above is for a Off Peak Day return £10.70 route via Hebden Bridge this would not meet your journey requirements.

The ticket I would recommend is a Off-Peak return Salford Crescent - Leeds Any Permitted £13.80, this would allow travel on the FTPE services between Manchester & Leeds via Huddersfield.

If your looking for anything cheaper then I would consider advance tickets but you would lose the flexibility.

Ah, NRE seems to suggest this ticket is valid on the first train of the day out of Leeds (see attachment) so I assumed it was an SVR.

Quite complex with FTPE, to get the lowest advance fares with a 16-25 railcard you must go through the special offers section of the site, scroll down to students (don't have to be a student, just a 16-25 RC holder - confusing!) then click buy tickets through that. You then get 50% off normal advance prices instead of just 34% that any other site or going through FTPE site the normal way would give you! Cheapest singles are £2.95 or £2.45 I think. Often good availability close to date.

This also has the added advantage of gaining the forum commission if booked through the right link! Stuck deciding between advances and the SVR, as ideally I'd get the 03.20 back from Leeds (which the SVR would allow - 04.30 next day rule) but there are no advances from LDS until at least 9am, however advances work out to about half the price of an SVR with FPTEs discount.

Could you make an 0215 from Leeds to Manchester? travel is via National Express priced currently at £3.00 funfare when booked online.

This may suit if your looking to beat the cost of the SVR, you could get the train to Leeds & the coach back.

Excellent suggestion; the first few trains out of Leeds are replaced by buses anyway so this is probably how I'll make the journey. Then it's only a mile walk back to Salford from the coach station

Hmm, tempting. Never done the route to Leeds by train before though and it's only a quid more on YP advances.

I am surprised at how cheap the coach is though at 7p a mile.

"fun" fares are my h less fun than they used to be now there's a £1 booking fee though +u have to print it. Used to be no booking fees (&loads of £1 fares even at last minute that probably needs a tread of its own!

Have to agree. When it's longer distance journeys - eg to North Wales I didn't mind paying the £1 booking fee as it was still cheaper than the train. But on such cheap tickets the fee just brings it into line with the advances available for the train.

Could you use an offpeak return between Salford and somewhere beyond Leeds, such that you could claim that Leeds was an overnight break and "continue" from there?

£1 fares are now very rare and usually only appear during promotions.

I do recall my £2 return from London - Leeds a few years ago to see a band (and about £6 in taxi and bus fares to get to and from my sisters to stay the night).

I've been to Leeds (loads), Liverpool (loads), London, Birmingham (loads), Wolverhampton, Middlesborough all for £1 and no booking fees with NatEx! ABout 5years ago was the peak! Also Megabus used to do totally free journeys a lot, book as many as u like + just pay 50p booking fee + nothing to print! They still do it but not very often and not as many routes!
