Bolton Log Train

There has been a log train (Colas) parked up in sidings on the down Bolton just outside Bolton station for most of the day today. Does anybody know anything about it and what it was doing there and where was it going? Not often you see freight parked up there. (Between Bolton and Mosses Gate)

There was an additional Carlisle to Chirk log train on Saturday 3rd
(which is unusual in itself), but as the WCML was blocked between
Wigan and Golbourne Junction, it had to be diverted via Bolton.

Unfortunately, there was no driver available to take the train forward,
so it has been dumped there UFN...

Slightly off topic but will the Bolton sidings and loops be electrified as part of phase 3.

Colas Class 56. It had a flashing portable taillight inside the front cab in the secondman's position. Not seen that before.

Very rare to see freight on the Preston-Manchester line...several double 221's around as well thanks to the diversions.

I would assume so. You never know when you may need those sidings. ANd it has not been unknown for you to be diverted into those loops due to a faster express behind you. And back on-topic, this train is causing something of a stink I believe. Why the hell did they release it from Carlisle when they knew about the block at Wigan and the lack of drivers with insufficient route knowledge? I think Colas will need to reverse it back up or get a route conductor in there from Virgin

Looking at RTT it looks like it might have gone (although I haven't been past today so I couldn't say for sure.)

A light engine came up from Arpley Sidings this afternoon, terminating at Burnden Jn sidings. Then at 1600 a Class 6 freight departed heading to Crewe Basford Hall. (http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/R83627/2014/05/05/advanced)

Probably not, and probably not interested, its a bank holiday so the end user probably not back at work til Tuesday

That was just a move to remove those ballast wagons at Burnden Jct. It was an EWS 66. This had nothing to do with the log train.

Reported over on WNXX, that this move was a collection of a couple of cripple wagons (used a DB 66). The 56 was also reported as still being there last night.

This train was still there today at 13:20 hrs - although the loco was running and there were about 6 blokes in orange dayglo stood next to it (clocked the driver in his colas vest - the rest were Network rail I think).
On my return journey through Bolton at about 15:30hrs the train was heading through the station back from which it came (towards Lostock). Looks like the loco had to shunt around and drag the whole lot back out the UPL. Nice to see something different!

Tail lamps are often left in cabs when trains are parked up in sidings or loops as if they are left on the engines lamp brackets they sometimes "go walkabouts" and are never seen again.

I think there used to be a company that reapired them for the TOC's and FOC's (NDS?) but now it seems working one's are in short supply and hence they are locked in cabs of engines!

Given that those two ballast wagons have been there since the Bolton area was remodelled about 20 years ago, you can forgive me for not thinking the movement I linked was their sudden removal!

Not 'those' ballast wagons. They'll be there forever. It was the ones that were ditched following the hot axle box problem late last year (I think)
